I thought for sure they would fix that in the remake, but nope, its bizarrely still the same.
You aren't alone in this. Which is funny to me because often people with complain about something like this, but at the same time complain the remake changes things too much. And it's like...people just want to complain and they never actually cared one way or the other.

Change can be good and it can be bad.

The trick is to change the bad part into good, but they do the opposite because they they focused on what was popular/memorable (Sephiroth/Aerith death) and decided that because it was popular they had to do something with that. While ignoring the part that weren't popular (because they weren't very good), because they weren't popular so who care.

Based on what you've said so far, and just now, I imagine there's literally nothing I could say to change your mind.

But I don't agree with you at all.

Now we've reached beyond Midgar and a game you would have though was almost over and that you must be finished with Disc 1 by now, here in the open world you realize that the game has barely even begun. Now you have a world map, an incredible overworld theme, and new places to go. Unfortunately unlike what you might think, FF7 is still linear as fuck the whole way through it. We might be in the open world, but the only place we can go for now is Kalm just to the Northeast of Midgar.

Kalm is the first place that really presents itself like a traditional fantasy type of town. The buildings are old European wood, there is no real sign of technology here, the best word to describe it is "quaint". For the player the only thing to do in town besides rob people is to visit the inn where the party will ask Cloud to explain what the fuck is going on and who the hell is Sephiroth. Here he describes the Nibelheim flashback which really does a lot of things to lead the player on. Sephiroth is revealed to be insanely strong, hitting for numbers you can only dream of up to this point, and casting insane levels of magic. No matter what random battle you encounter Sephiroth wins in 1 hit, with the exception of the dragon during the intro of this story.

Cloud tells the story of how he and Sephiroth were sent to his hometown of Nibelheim to investigate a reactor that Shrina had left up in the mountains. The town had been complaining of monsters attacking the village and Shrina needed to make sure that if the monsters were the reactor's fault, then the two SOLDIERS could deal with it.

In retrospect this mission is incredibly stupid on Shrina's part. You have to assume that the higher ups in charge of SOLDIER, the reactors, and Hojo himself, would be aware of what they left behind in Nibelheim, and if those things were found by Sephiroth of all people, it would be a big fucking problem. When I think about Shrina, it really is quite amazing how absolutely stupidly incompetent they actually are. They have very little protections in place for literally any of their facilities, reactors, hell their fucking headquarters was barely guarded. And here in the nibelheim reactor they abandoned, they literally left Jenova there for fucking years, alone, unguarded, and then when they finally send people to check up on it, one of those people is Sephiroth!? That's the dumbest shit, they should have done everything in their power to keep Sephiroth as far away from Nibelheim as possible, forever.

But that doesn't happen, Cloud and Sephiroth make it to the reactor where Sephiroth realizes he's not what he thinks he is and goes a little looney about it. After killing everyone in the Sephiroth goes to steal Jenova away only to be confronted by Cloud. However Cloud cannot tell the party how he fought or beat Sephiroth in that moment as he can remember nothing beyond that.

The party is confused but at least they have some idea about who they're after. As the party leaves the Inn, Tifa hangs back lost in a questionable thought....

Back in the overworld you have only one path to follow which wraps around the nearby mountains to a farm and beyond the farm is a swamp with a big scary snake shadow in it. If you step onto the swamp water the snake attacks you and you will die unless you are a grinding god. I grinded once and beat the Zolam snake this early into the game once, it was cool. The snake just respawns though so....pointless.

Doubling back to the chocobo farm the kid Billy inside the stables will give you a materia that causes chocobos to appear where ever tracks exist on the world map. In order to catch a chocobo you have to kill all the other enemies in battle without hurting the bird. He also sells greens that when used in battle distract the chocobo so that it wont run away as easily in battle.

Once you have a bird, run across the swamp to encounter a dead Zolam impaled on a broken tree. Only Sephiroth could have done this.

Past the dead Zolam is the Mithril Mines a very small zone with a couple of items and the first extremely good grinding spot. Enemy groups appear in 4-6 and using a summon will basically wipe them out completely. This will very quickly allow you to get all the limit break levels for every character and the exp is fantastic as well especially since the battles require zero effort. You can absolutely reach the high 30's here and go kill the zolam in a couple hours no problem.

Otherwise the party encounters the turks here, for the first time meeting Elena the girl and Tseng the leader. They inform the party that they aren't currently after nor concerned with Cloud and the others and simply tell the group to stay out of the way and everything will be fine.

Once outside the mines you are in the next segment of the world which has three locations available to visit. One is a sleeping man in a cave who you can reach until you come back with the buggy, the other is Fort Condor which is a tower defense which is an absolutely worthless mini game throughout the entire game. We have to come to Fort Condor in disc 2 to play the mini game once, but outside of that there is literally nothing on offer here. The final location is Junon which is a Shrina costal town fortified with a giant fuck-off cannon.

Before headed to Junon you can mess around in the forest areas around here and meet Yuffie, who will join your party if you can defeat her and answer her question puzzle correctly afterward. She is a second long range character that will help with the next boss fight.

Junon much like Midgar has a poverty ridden town under the modern and rich city above, upon entering the town you are told to go see the dolphin at the beach where you'll meet a little girl training a dolphin. She doesn't trust you and thinks your Shrina so she demands you leave her alone, only for a flying fish monster to show up and attack the Dolphin. She runs to help and we run in to save them both. This boss is called BottomSwell and he is a mix of Aps from the sewer under Corneo's place and the Reno right during the sector 7 plate collapse. Bottomswell with hit everyone including himself with waves of water, which wont hurt him nearly as much as they hurt you, and he will also put your party members into bubbles. Unlike Reno these bubbles will rapidly tick your HP down and can only be hurt with magic. This fight is fairly easy regardless depending on if you grinded in the mines at all, however it's a nice example of the game taking mechanics it's already told you about and combining them plus making them more dangerous. It's a very natural increase in difficulty despite it being easily overpowered if you took any leveling up time. Also if you have Yuffie, Barret, and Cloud (equiped with a long range materia from the Mines) you can have a full team that can actively attack the boss. Since it flies, normal melee characters will not be able to hit him without magic adding another level of complexity to the fight.

Regardless once you beat the boss the girl is drowned and Cloud needs to do CPR on her. You press a button to hold your breath, and press it again to breathe into the girl. You cannot possible fail this mini game, if you give her nothing but baby breaths it just takes like 15 of them to wake her up but you will wake her regardless eventually.

The girls family gets you a hotel room out of thanks and in the morning she gives you another summon and offers you a way into the city above via the dolphin. Cloud is the player character so he is the only one who can jump on the Dolphin so up you go. The rest of the crew will appear up in the city magically anyway. Once Cloud makes it up to the city he is mistaken for a Shrina grunt and is immediately forced into uniform and into Rufus's parade march. This is another mini game where you must fall into time with the march and raise your gun in time with the rest of the group. People announcing the parade on TV will call you out for sucking at this because you will suck at this and will probably send you a bomb. If you manage to do well somehow, they can send you a materia, but it's not worth caring about.

After the parade you are given some free time and then told to go to the Shrina ship docked at the harbor for Rufus's sendoff ceremony. This is a mini game that's just a quick time event, push the buttons as they appear and win. Depending on how you do Rufus will give you a prize and then you run onto the ship where your party is already waiting for you for some reason. This whole section feels like it was glossed over but there really is no story here at all. Cloud never tells the party any of this, yet the party magically knows to sneak onto the ship. It's never explained how they knew about the boat, nor how they got into the city in the first place. They all even disguised themselves. Okay whatever.

Small thing to note, there are a couple bars you can visit in Junon, one of which is a bar that only serves bald people where you can find Rude hanging out, and another more traditional bar where you can find Elena drinking her sorrows away. Both of these are in Rebirth as well.

Yeah the flashback doesn't make a whole lot of sense from Shinra point of view. You can realllllly stretch and say that Shinra itself doesn't know about the stuff that Hojo has been doing there so they don't know about how dumb it is to send Sephiroth, but thats hard to hold together. You can chalk it up to just one of the other part of the flashback that doesn't quite make sense, but unlike most other aspect, this one seems to be unintentional.

Still, the idea of a flashback in a game told by an unreliable narrator is something that I don't think had ever really been done (and hasn't been done that many time since), so it make for a very nice set piece. And having Sephiroth been in your party with insane high stats, compare to Cloud puny stats, really help make him seems formidable and help establish him as a serious threat.

The midgarzolom not being a serious mini boss is a bit of a shame, would have been fun if its was a bit of a proto weapon fight. But its nice that the obstacle isn't just an invisible wall or a locked door. Although the game introduce Chocobo, but then does nothing with them for a very long time, so its not like it was that important to teach the player about it.

Junon is a bit weird how little actually happen, it feel like maybe there should have been another Sephiroth attack here, or they could have finally done something fun with Rufus. They could have played more with Cloud being a grunt too. This is the part where the game is the shakiest imo, story is also not that strong since we're just vaguely following the robe people, but you don't really, you just follow the only path you can. Maybe if there was some sort of reason for you to go in this direction, like you had to go back to Nibelheim for reason X (maybe something to do with Jenova).

Hold onto this thought, because you would be surprised how very little plot happens in the vast majority of the games area's.

With all the criticism of how Rebirth handled pacing and characters, I really feel like people don't remember the truth about the original game because shockingly little happens for the rest of the 1st disc.

You at least get some good vignette here and there, like Barret backstory in the desert and Red 13 in cosmos canyon (with some decent plot progression), but Junon has nothing... I guess its to establish the giant gun?

And so the journey continues.

The party hitches a ride on the Shinra 8, the president's ride to the Western Continent. Why he is heading West is unknown and why he doesn't just take the Highwind is also unknown (maintenance I guess) but still just wait a day for it to be done and travel faster, whatever.

Our friends are all hiding around the boat dresses as employees and we have to talk to everyone, once we do an alarm sounds because apparently an intruder is on the boat. But since we are all here who could it be? We race downstairs only to find Sephiroth hiding in the engine room, ranting about a Reunion. Cloud tries to confront him and it should be noted here that Sephiroth has no idea who Cloud even is. Which is weird right?

Sephiroth flies away and leaves Jenova's dick on the ground to become a giant monster for us to fight. Afterwards Cloud wonders what Sephiroth's deal is, what is the Reunion?

Anyway we arrive in the costal paradise of Costa Del Sol, where you can talk to Hojo on vacation if you want....or you can leave immediately because there is absolutely nothing you need to do here. Which is another entire location in this game in which you do nothing and nothing ever happens here, even late game this location serves no purpose except being able to buy a house here for free rests I guess. Pointless location.

From Costa Del Sol you run up the mountain and navigate abandoned mining tracks to the village of Corel which is Barret's hometown. If and only IF Barret is in the part at the time you arrive you will get a scene in which the people don't like him very much. If Barret is not with your active party then the only thing this town does is serve as the way to get into the Gold Saucer.

Let's make a quick tally of the locations so far:

Kalm - only here for you to have the flashback, nothing else happens here
Chocobo ranch - gives you the materia to catch chocobos, and allows you to breed them at the end of the game.
Mithril Mines - Three screens of "dungeon"
Ft. Condor - You can play a shitty mini game here, but you aren't ever forced too. You do have to play once in disc 2 but you can just lose immediately and nothing changes.
Junon - A couple of mini games to hide yourself onto a boat
Costa Del sol - Nothing happens here
Corel - Maybe you learn something about Barret maybe, and there is an event here in disc 2.

We've cover a big chunk of the planet and have basically done nothing. Nothing in the main story has progressed since we've left Midgar. I love this game, I do, but there is a LOT of nothing that happens especially in Disc 1.

Alright so now we're in the Gold Saucer and the girls wanna have fun which pisses Barret off. He runs off and you have to pick a party member to go around the amusement park with. Only one though because the game needs to force Cait Sith into your party here, which is all you have to do here. You can play some mini games if you want, but the moment you enter the Battle Square a soldier falls over dead and you rush up to see what's going on. Apparently a man with a gun for an arm has attacked. Before you can defend yourself Dio the Owner of the Saucer shows up because your group came with a guy that had a gun for an arm so obviously you're guilty and he tosses everyone into the desert prison below.

Except Barret, Barret's already down here somehow. The party confronts him and demands to know what is going on. Here is where Barret tells his backstory, Shrina came and offered the coal-mining town and easier way of life by allowing them to build a reactor in the mountains. The town agreed and once the reactor was built someone attacked it. Shinra blamed it on the town and killed everyone except Barret and his buddy Dyne who both lost their arms in the attack. Now out of all times Dyne has attacked the Saucer and is hiding out down here in the prison. So Barret needs to talk to him and tell him many things.

Out in the desert we find Dyne and it's revealed that Marlene isn't Barret's daughter, she's Dyne's. Dyne has been completely lost and gone crazy with the death's of his wife and daughter, and Barret tries to convince Dyne to come back to Midgar with him because Marlene's still alive. Dyne decides that he should kill Barret instead because everything that has happened has been Barret's fault. So you beat Dyne and Barret still tries to reason with him, but Dyne can't handle the guilt and the grief any longer ending his own life by jumping off a cliff.

Dyne's whole reveal and Barret's backstory feels tonally awkward, because it doesn't really fit who Barret is. It doesn't explain his extremism, nor his obsession with the planet. If anything his backstory should have made him lay low somewhere far from Shrina territory to raise Marlene as repentance for his decisions. It's a touching scene for sure, it just doesn't fit him.

Now we have to escape the prison and in order to do that all we have to do is win a Chocobo Race which is the introduction to this mini game that we''ll need to do a lot in order to get the best shit in the game later on. It's awkward but super easy as it is basically automated and really only depends on your bird's stats. This 1st time playing the mini game you have to pay attention but once you start breeding birds you will outclass the game so hard that you can win being AFK.

After winning the race, Dio calls you and gives you a dune buggy as an apology so you can get out of the desert prison. The buggy can cross desert and shallow river crossings which allow us to go to the next location Gongaga.

Just kidding Gongaga is a nothing burger. You can visit Zack's home and have an awkward conversation with Tifa and Aerith. As well as learn that Reno and Rude wanna fuck your girlfriends, which....can you blame them? You can fight them and find Scarlet looking at the ruined reactor where she says the materia is shit. It's Titan's summoning materia not shit at all actually you stupid cow.

Gongaga is an optional lore area, you never have to come here or do anything with it. But it does build the underlying lore a bit.

Next is Cosmo Canyon and the dumbest backstory of them all. Red XIII's! You are forced to come here, if you try to bypass it the buggy will breakdown and you must do the story in Cosmo Canyon in order to get it fixed. Here we learn that Red's name is Nanaki and he's part of some race that lives a super long time so while he might be 47 years old, his maturity is that of a teenager at best. His grandpa is human which is weird, but his grandpa is also very knowledgable about the planet and you get a nice lecture in the planetarium here about the lifestream and why using Mako the way Shinra does is horrible.

After the presentation everyone gathers around a fire to reflect on the journey thus far. The interesting thing here is that Barret says he formed AVALANCHE here which gets extremely ret-conned in other FF7 material. AVALANCHE is revealed to have been formed by Rufus Shrina himself in order to usurp his father. Barret's formation of the group also implied that his little rag tag group of terrorists are all AVALANCHE was, but again that's ret-conned to be a bigger group and Barret's party is just an offshoot that didn't follow the rules.

Nanaki reflects about his father being a coward little pussycat and lements, at which point Bugenhagen tells Nanaki to bring Cloud and another party member along to see the truth. After a short dungeon Nanaki learns that his father actually sacrificed his life to hold back the invasion of the GI-warriors and saved everyone from the Gi invasion. His father turned to stone a hero, and Nanaki gains the resolve to be just like his father and continue to be a protector.

This story for Red is dumb because in what world would there ever be any reason to allow Nanaki to believe his father was a coward who abandoned them? What purpose does that serve? The cave is sealed and the Gi are locked away so it's not like revealing that truth would ruin anything. They just let Nanaki believe his father was an asshole for decades for literally no reason. In my head I blame his Mom who was a vindictive ex-wife who just wanted to poison her son's mind by lying about his dad so that he would be a mommy's boy forever or something.

Either way, Nanaki will never have another character moment ever again for the rest of the game. His entire character exists in the Shrina building to break him free, and here in Cosmo Canyon and that is it. Furthermore Barret's backstory is also finished and he never has another charact moment in the game as well.

So far so good.

Barret environmentalism is kinda just an off shoot from his backstory: Reactor+shinra fuck everything therefore reactor bad and shinra need to be stopped. It does feel like its missing a chapter in between that could have been explored a bit, but its not like they're entirely disconnected. Its also much easier to gather people with some sort of goal rather than "I hate Shinra so wanna beat them up".

The first time I played FF7 was actually the demo available on some of those CD that came with game magazine, and its actually just this small section after costa del sol, which is a really strange decision for what to include in a demo since its some of the least interesting portion of the game.

Red XIII still has a bit of a role to play with the later section when Shinra tries to stop the meteor, well mostly his grandfather, but still (also the reason Scarlet says the Titan materia is worthless is because they were looking for huge materia rather than regular one).
