Why do so many people not have avatars?

I'm seeing more new people join but almost all of them just blend into a sea of letters and I don't understand why they don't just grab even a picture of their cat for use as an avatar.

I have found that there are people on the internet with such a minimalist sense of aesthetics (to the point that implying that they have a sense of aesthetics at all is being polite) that they ask for options to turn off avatars, period.

I mentally categorize them as things that would get me in trouble if said out loud.

I've also had a couple of friends who joined the new forums who needed help figuring out how to upload an avatar, so, could also be tech illiteracy, since the method for doing so here is pretty standard.

This is something I ask myself every time the forum changes and everybody's avatars reset. I believe the answer is a lot of people are FRICKEN LAZY. SET YOUR AVATARS, IT DRIVES ME CRAZY! GAH!

- don't want to use pictures against the wishes of the artist for my profile
- don't trust those various internet avatar sites to actually bother with getting the rights or consent
- haven't found a good picture yet that i want to be associated with and that really is free (not that i spent that much time looking)
