So, there are very few games that I find myself actually excited about these days. Mostly it will be titles that I'm like "ok that looks interesting, I might remember to wishlist it, and maybe pick it up in a year or 2 when on sale." Very, VERY rarely, will I see a trailer for something and be like "ok yes, that is definitely something I'm psyched about, and am eagerly anticipating what playing it will be like."
So I thought I'd see what games we are actually hyped for.
For me, it's 2 games, and yes they are both for the PS5 coming soon, but whatever title on whatever platform you are hyped for, is fine.
First, Kena: Bridge of Spirits.
I just, I find myself constantly thinking about this trailer. It hits so many buttons for me personally. First, the music is just spot on gorgeous, and I'm HIGHLY influenced by music. It's probably the single most emotionally impactful thing you can do in media, to stir my blood and make me cry. And the score in this trailer is fantastic to me. It's gentle wind instruments at the beginning, broken by a strong drum beat to shake up the flow, the rising horn sections at the climax, just all of it is like a monkey with a stick, hitting my "Yes Button" like he's on crack.
Plus, it's got a story that implies a non-violent protagonist. Yes I know the trailer shows her doing lots of combat, but the opening words are "I know you are kind, you think you can help these troubled spirits." And the devs said the game is about forgiveness and redemption, so it seems a pretty strong narrative thread that she's not trying to kill these spirits, but free them from whatever corruption they are inflicted with, to try and heal the land. And the final shot of her letting out a Fus Ro Dah and purging the blight from a section of the map, definitely suggests that. And I am SO down for that. I've never been a huge fan of violence for violence sake, and using it as a shorthand for gameplay story structure. As I've gotten older I find I like it even less, and really gravitate towards games that allow a no-kill run, or similar option for resolving the challenges the game puts forth. So the main theme of the story, is equally hitting me in ways that I am looking forward to.
I find myself watching the trailer over and over, mostly for the song, but also for the imagery. Just, everything about it is really getting me psyched.
The other is the Miles Morales Spider-Man.
This isn't the official trailer, and is someone else's mashup, but damn if I don't like it more, due to the musical choice, and the restructuring of some of the timing on the images used.
This one, I'm psyched because I'm a huge sucker for legacy stories. I don't know why, but I always find the idea of the passing of the torch from one person to another, to be deeply powerful, and I really enjoyed the initial run of Miles Morales comics when I read them. Personally I hope they go the route in the game, that they did with the comics and Into the Spider-verse, where Peter Parker dies, but sadly I doubt they will do that with the game franchise, at least this soon.
But yeah, those are the games I'm actually hyped about. What games are you looking forward to?
