Upcoming games you are genuinely hyped about.

So, there are very few games that I find myself actually excited about these days. Mostly it will be titles that I'm like "ok that looks interesting, I might remember to wishlist it, and maybe pick it up in a year or 2 when on sale." Very, VERY rarely, will I see a trailer for something and be like "ok yes, that is definitely something I'm psyched about, and am eagerly anticipating what playing it will be like."

So I thought I'd see what games we are actually hyped for.

For me, it's 2 games, and yes they are both for the PS5 coming soon, but whatever title on whatever platform you are hyped for, is fine.

First, Kena: Bridge of Spirits.
I just, I find myself constantly thinking about this trailer. It hits so many buttons for me personally. First, the music is just spot on gorgeous, and I'm HIGHLY influenced by music. It's probably the single most emotionally impactful thing you can do in media, to stir my blood and make me cry. And the score in this trailer is fantastic to me. It's gentle wind instruments at the beginning, broken by a strong drum beat to shake up the flow, the rising horn sections at the climax, just all of it is like a monkey with a stick, hitting my "Yes Button" like he's on crack.

Plus, it's got a story that implies a non-violent protagonist. Yes I know the trailer shows her doing lots of combat, but the opening words are "I know you are kind, you think you can help these troubled spirits." And the devs said the game is about forgiveness and redemption, so it seems a pretty strong narrative thread that she's not trying to kill these spirits, but free them from whatever corruption they are inflicted with, to try and heal the land. And the final shot of her letting out a Fus Ro Dah and purging the blight from a section of the map, definitely suggests that. And I am SO down for that. I've never been a huge fan of violence for violence sake, and using it as a shorthand for gameplay story structure. As I've gotten older I find I like it even less, and really gravitate towards games that allow a no-kill run, or similar option for resolving the challenges the game puts forth. So the main theme of the story, is equally hitting me in ways that I am looking forward to.

I find myself watching the trailer over and over, mostly for the song, but also for the imagery. Just, everything about it is really getting me psyched.

The other is the Miles Morales Spider-Man.

This isn't the official trailer, and is someone else's mashup, but damn if I don't like it more, due to the musical choice, and the restructuring of some of the timing on the images used.

This one, I'm psyched because I'm a huge sucker for legacy stories. I don't know why, but I always find the idea of the passing of the torch from one person to another, to be deeply powerful, and I really enjoyed the initial run of Miles Morales comics when I read them. Personally I hope they go the route in the game, that they did with the comics and Into the Spider-verse, where Peter Parker dies, but sadly I doubt they will do that with the game franchise, at least this soon.

But yeah, those are the games I'm actually hyped about. What games are you looking forward to?

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Halo Infinite, although I guess hyped would be the wrong word, lets say cautiously optimistic, it looks good and like it plays well, not sure about the rest though but I just finished Halo 3 from the MCC and am ready for more.

For the upcoming games I
genuinely cannot wait for/day one purchase, we have Hollow Knight Silksong, Freedom Planet 2, Spiritfarer, Rift Breaker, and Star Renegades.
I loved Hollow Knight, this looks like not quite the same but close enough that I'll love it also.

Freedom Planet was a huge surprise for me, I always liked the asthetic of Sonic but I never liked his 2d games. But, I really got into Freedom Planet and enjoyed the hell out of it, even with its wonkey fanficcy story.

I'm ready to be an emotional wreck over this game.

I knew I wanted this one since it was announced, I've enjoyed all the other games these guys have done. I also played the demo a few months ago and it plays so well and was just a ton of fun.

This one is almost more about the graphics then anything else, the gameplay looks good but it has such a striking style, that I can't help but give it a bunch of attention.

Oh right, also Serious Sam 4, it looks cool and I've liked most of the other Serious Sam games.

Hades still isn't out of early access yet. But it's closer on the horizon, and therefore so is the console port. I believe I am owed a patience discount, supergiant games! Ok, only kidding, you deserve my hard-stolen human currencies regardless.

I was gonna say 'nothing', but then I saw Breath of the Wild 2 and Hollow Knight: Silksong mentioned. So yeah, those two I guess.

So, is genuine hype a requirement? Cuz I think hype is mostly a bad thing that benefits no one except a bunch of greedy shitheel publishers and the whole “I must not hype. Hype is the mind-killer. Hype is the little-death..." and so on thing. But fuck it, I'm a jaded mofo and also pretty drunk rn, so here's some games I have a 'middling hope won't make me regret the purchase' for:
  • Hollow Knight Silksong
  • Shin Megami Tensei V
  • Shin Megami Tensei III remastered
  • Vampire The Masquerade 2
  • Metroid Prime 4
  • Gamedec
  • Cyberpunk 2077

For fuck's sake, fine. Games you are EXCITED about. EAGER about. Pick your word of choice that doesn't make you derail the thread into a semantic debate about word choice and the negative aspects of video game advertisement.

You okay there, dude?

@Chimpzy You're gonna wanna ease up on the "hype is the mind killer" mantra. At least on this topic.

Maybe it's because I'm a miserable piece of shit and I'm never exited for anything, but nothing, nothing at all.

There are games that I'm interested in and that I hope turn out to be good but there's nothing I'm genuinely exited for, the upside is that at l'm never disappointed because I don't really expect stuff to be good but at the same time I'm never exited for anything which really sucks.

Honestly it kind of sucks seeing people all over getting hype for the upcoming consoles/games and being unable to yourself because you've come to approach everything gaming related with a pessimistic distrust.

The great thing about being a pessimist is that you're either proven right or pleasantly surprised.

Well, Halo Infinite is the one game I've set aside money for, so there's arguably that, even though I'm very dubious about the game at this point.

Anyway, without getting into semantics of what counts as hype, I guess I can nominate:

-Crash Bandicoot 4
-Diablo IV
-Overwatch 2
-Resident Evil: Village

Sure, but you also feel like an ass for ruining other people's fun by bringing up facts as to why the thing they're exited for is likely to suck.

I get where you and @Kae are both coming from, but I always use a light touch. Or try not to put too much stock in to my hype or excitement. Have hype, but within reason. Even games that I'm excited for that match my expectations can still have minor disappointments. Yet, I won't let them take over me the whole way through. I love Streets of Rage 4, but I am dissapointed they took out a level, some enemy types, and did not have more boss variety. Especially not bringing back Onihime and Yasha. I've clocked in more hours than I care to count, and still having fun with the game.

It's fine, I just get annoyed sometimes when, instead of actually addressing the topic of the thread, people jump on a single word, and...I don't want to say twist, because that implies malicious intent, but, well, derail it with a semantic debate.

And I don't mean to sound dismissive when I say this, but if you don't do excited or eager, then why bother posting in a thread where someone is asking you to share something you don't do? I mean, just...don't post in that thread if you have nothing to contribute?

Cyberpunk 2077 and Vampire the Masquerade 2. Horizon Zero Dawn doesn’t count cos I had that on PS4 beforehand.
