But God of War never had grinding for crafting materials.
The grind can get annoying at times. And it's ridiculous kratos needs armor in the first place for stat boosts when he is a freaking God of War. There's any positive to take away from it is that at least on New game plus you get extra bonus XP and crafting material in new crafting material for different sets of armor. It doesn't fix the entire issue, but at least they tried. Want to talk about terrible grinding? If you got your PS2 or a PS3 that plays PS2 and PS1 discs, try playing chaos legion. That game is a fucking grindfest.

I don't have a PS4 so I don't have GOW 4.

Playing Ghost of Sparta and so far I feel other weapons and magic spells in this game are at their most useless.

And I have seen enough of 4 that I can safely say that "its just not GOW anymore"

No more than RE4 wasn’t RE anymore, or Mario 64 wasn’t Mario anymore. Ascension showed the old formula was losing steam, but those games will always be classics.

Having said that yeah, the focus on upgrades and crafting was just bandwagoning what’s popular now. I don’t think I’ll play the sequel if it ends up like The Witcher series, having to start at ground zero every game and re-acquire everything again even though canonically it makes virtually zero sense.

The old GoW games got away with it because they were very simple, scripted and linear action/adventure, where everything was attainable without ruining the pacing

*looks at the post from banjo bear right above yours* Well I mean, someone already had that covered xD I'm not fond of the idea of having to remap my entire setup from the base of the console, just to accommodate one game though. I was mainly just curious if any game had ever had that feature, as I can't recall ever seeing it in game. Alternate layouts sure, but not just remapping. The fact that the PS4 lets you do that is cool, but I don't like the idea of having to reset it any time I switch games I guess? *shrugs* Honestly I don't have too many issues with the controller layouts with games. At most I'll have like 1 button that is a bit wonky for my tastes, but I can usually adapt. Or it's an issue like @Dirty Hipsters where the problem involves a playstyle that I never actually attempted, so the problem never manifested for me personally.
Unfortunately remapping from the base PS4 level won't work for me. That just lets you move around what button does what, but you can't move around specific functions.

Like I would rather than weapon wheel button not be a single button, but to instead use the Dpad (like the Batman Arkham games for example). I can't actually set that up. At best I could move the L1 button press to a different button, but in order to use the weapon wheel in this game properly you have to be able to hold L1, use the left joystick to select, and press X to confirm, so you can't do that using just the face buttons, you have to waste either R1, R2, L1 or L2 on the weapon wheel button, because that button HAS to be a hold, because that's how the game was designed.

The reason I want to do the above is because I want to be able to use L1 as the crouch/slide button, so that I can sprint, slide, aim, and shoot without having to take my thumb off the right joystick. And I want to do this because I'm playing this game in a very active and aggressive style rather than using stealth, which I find to be significantly more fun.

Does the game let you fine-aim while sprinting? It’s been so long but I seem to recall sprinting into position, and then sliding say under a Bellowback and then fine-aiming once the slide is initiated and things slow down to line up a shot.
You can't fine aim while sprinting, but you can still move the camera.

Essentially my problem with the game is that the fraction of a second that I don't have camera control when I initiate the slide makes the game feel very unresponsive because a lot of the time when I go into a slide is immediately after I whip the camera around because one of the first skills I got was slowing down time when I aim while sliding.

So the move I WANT to do is sprinting into a 180 turn, into a slide, aiming, and using the slow motion bullet time. Unfortunately hitting the square button to slide and then transitioning my thumb back to the stick throws off my aim every time, and getting back on target wastes too much of the slow mo timing making that feature feel almost useless. But it's clearly something the developers wanted me to do because it's one of the first unlockable skills, and it's one of the first things you see Aloy do in her training cutscene at the start of the game.

Essentially the game wants you to be running in a straight line and already be aiming at the exact spot you want to shoot before initiating a slide, and I resent that because it could have been much easier and more responsive if they had planned the controls slightly better.

Has there ever been a console game that lets you remap controller inputs? I can't recall one personally. I know they have alternate schemes, but frankly those have never seemed to improve my control issues, as it will fix one button problem, but create 2 more by placing other things in awkward spots.
Just realized I never answered your question. Yes, there are console games that let you fully remap controls.

Overwatch lets you do it. Fully remappable controls FOR EACH CHARACTER.

I think pretty much all fighting games let you completely remap controls.

If I remember correctly Deus Ex let you fully remap your controls.

I'm sure there's more, I just don't play nearly as many console games as I do PC, and one of the reasons I really like playing on PC is because most games let you fully customize your controls.

For some reason, the PC port of Dark Souls 3 allows you to rebind controller inputs, but the console versions don't to my knowledge. Go figure. At least Sekiro allows for full rebinding even on console.

Honestly, I find the classic games worst with this. How many times has Kratos died only to get out of Hades/The Underworld? Also, a lot of the God of Wars games had pacing issues with puzzles and certain mid-game or near the end of the game. For me at least, III had the worst pacing. I have not played most of the side games, so I don't have much of a reference.

Going in a straight line is a lot different - actually the opposite - from turning 180 on a dime though, no? Idk how it’s even physically possible to maintain a sprint in two opposing directions with the speed and precision you seem to expect. I mean, she has to stop at one point. Maybe all that’s needed is an option to keep the camera behind her automatically.

When you’re in the slide, a lot of times you’re moving past a target anyways via underneath or by the side, so unless it’s always right in front of you the slow down function is pretty useful; at least for how I played. Mileage may vary though.

Ring Fit Adventure

After hearing good things about it, decided to give it a go and yeah, you can get a surprisingly good workout out of it. First time calibration to determine the intensity of the exercises takes a while, but does a decent job of setting you up (and you can always change to make things easier/harder) Gamifying exercising into a light action rpg is also kind of a stroke of genius, introducing that "just one more try/level/turn" to help keep you motivated. My first time playing I worked up quite a sweat without really noticing how long I'd already been at it. All in all, it's pretty basic calisthenics and cardio, and not a replacement for hitting the gym, my biggest issue being that it doesn't really offer much in the way of advice on proper nutrition. But I'd recommend it for people who are starting working out or who want something for when doing their regular gym routine is a no go due to time constraints or other reasons (like a pandemic). Also, at $80 its pretty affordable compared to many home exercise solutions and the ring you use in the exercises seems very durable, so I'm not worried about breaking it unless purposefully trying to.

I mostly meant the upgrades were more tolerable because they didn’t require a ton of extra time and effort, and mostly just happened in a more streamline way over the course of a playthrough. Even the new gear Kratos gets is scripted through the story. It might’ve also made more sense even thematically imo, since Greek mythology deals with endless cycles of loss and tragedy.

I get it. I will say weapon variety has always been a problem with the series. The game still with the best weapon variety is II. I will give Ascension credit for its world weapon systems. Ascension uses an old school approach of gaining weapons from fallen enemies and using them like you would in a 2d brawler. Bayonetta has a similar thing, but even more weapon variety. Especially if you take the second game into account.

I know there was few on PS3, I don't recall any except Borderlands 2 off the top of my head.

You can at least switch between default and custom so you can have in a sense 2 settings that are switchable. If you switch between a lot of games, you can at least take screenshots of your setups for each game.

You can play the game in a very aggressive style sprinting and sliding all over the place.

That's one of the very best skills in the whole game.

Perhaps I did make it to some people's ignore list then. To be expected I spose.

In between Judgement, been doing Arkhum Knight with all the extra content now added for cheap monies. Weirdly shares a few similarities between them now I think of it. Quite enjoy madly thrashing about town with an angry batmobile tbh, dont care if its un-Batmanlike. But even if it is, the plot very much is about him losing his mind to the joker and fear gas anyway...it makes sense him slipping into recklessness in relentless pursuit of his goal; what's a few smashed concretes and overly maimed goons really going to matter? Harley's mini story was a nice change in tone, but painfully short.

That and Saint's Row 4. Gotta satiate the violent desires between all the wholesome detective beatings.

Dark Souls 3 does some weird stuff with poise and also shields that make it play significantly different from 1 and 2. You might as well assume that you don't have poise in Dark Souls 3 because it doesn't work the way you think it does. Blocking with a shield also takes significantly more stamina than in previous games, and shields have a lot less stability.

I think it makes the game harder early on because of muscle memory and expectations built up from the previous games.

Enemies in general are also just a bit faster and more aggressive, because your character is also significantly faster and more responsive. Honestly, of all the Souls games I think it feels the best to play, though weirdly enough it's the one that I've beaten the fewest amount of times.
