Dr. BethAnn McLaughlin is a former assistant professor of neurology, a researcher, and one of the founders of MeTooSTEM, a group working to highlight gender discrimination in the field of science. In February 2020, McLaughlin was accused of “sidelining” people of color as well as “[bullying] volunteers, activists, and fellow leaders,” according to a report in Science Magazine. But on Monday morning McLaughlin was also accused of running a years-long Twitter identity scam, wherein she allegedly pretended to be a bisexual, Native American anthropology professor at Arizona State University.

According to the International Business Times, McLaughlin, who is white, “has been accused by academics and Twitter users for masquerading as a non-existent bi-sexual Native American professor” using the handle @Sciencing_Bi. On Saturday, McLaughlin tweeted from her account, @McLNeuro, that her dear friend @Sciencing_Bi had died due to issues related to having contracted covid-19. And in tweets that are no longer available because both accounts have been suspended, McLaughlin wrote about her friendship with the deceased professor, per IBT.

However, Arizona State University has no such record of any staff members dying recently, according to Rachel Leingang, a reporter with the Arizona Republic who was working on a story about the deceased professor.

Leingang noted that McLaughlin’s claim that the two had never met in person went against previous claims by McLaughlin that they had. But according to the
International Business Times, “McLaughlin claimed to have personally known the professor,” and one Twitter user pointed out that McLaughlin was the only person to have communicated with @Sciencing_Bi outside of Twitter. The same user captured screenshots of the eulogy thread on McLaughlin’s account before it was suspended and the tweets disappeared into the ether. The user also found @Sciencing_Bi’s first tweet from 2016 which reads, “@McLNeuro Loved your posts today. Got me to get back on Twitter. Now what?”

Used to know a mentally troubled middle-aged red piller type guy who had like 5 (at least) other social media accounts where they would always pretend to have conversations with each other and comment on other people's posts with some indecipherable twatwaffle amongst the profiles. Was the only person i had to block in the end. Well, more than 5 times obviously. The dangers of heavy drug abuse mixing with toxic masculinity not good for anybody. Did wonder if there were more sophisticated versions of that happening elsewhere.

I don't think it's that complex. Take an insecure person who feels small, boring, neglected, overlooked. That person may inclined to create or latch onto things and try to install themselves as prominent members, because the visibility and power it gives them a huge sense of worth. However, they are also likely to be extremely jealous of their position, which could lead to all manner of unpleasantness such as bullying, because they will have an inflated sense of their importance and be fearful of being overshadowed. Actually, we could as easily be describing Donald Trump here, except he had the money and means to take a great deal of power.

Similarly, such a mindset may also inspire creating fake personas, because fake personas of seemingly very interesting people draws a huge amount of attention, which they can both enjoy vicariously: of course, in this case, by making herself a friend of the fake persona, she can leech some of the interest off for herself, too.

So after being accused of sidelining people of color, instead of actually trying to improve this situation, she instead becomes her own "Native American BFF"? Seriously, talk about making a bad situation worse. To top it off she then goes and kills off her imaginary Native American BFF, and I would guess that her group still has under representation of minorities~ even imaginary ones since she seems to be content with killing them off.

Was it that or was she trying to claim a Native American BFF to show she doesn't hate minorities or something after being accused of sidelining them? It very well may be the " I have a black friend" BS with a twist. She couldn't even get a real minority friend that would "vouch for her" so she had to invent one.

That is what leads me to believe she was doing this in a bizarre attempt to say "look I'm not racist, I have a Native American BFF"

I read somewhere that she's going to have some kind of court case or something next month? That may have been the impetus for killing off her imaginary friend, perhaps she was worried about them trying to interview this "person" she apparently spends a lot of time with.

Strangely enough, I don't think this is the case because the timeline doesn't work out. It says she made the fake twitter account in 2016, and then founded the organization in 2018, and was accused of the bullying in 2020.

It seems she made herself a fake minority twitter friend while they had her tenure on hold because of accusations she was trashtalking all her colleagues on social media. By that timeline, it seems more like a "look at me, I get along with professors" than a "look at me, I get along with minorities".

Well, it makes sense.

Some critics also said that Sciencing_Bi, who was tweeting since at least 2016, only began to discuss her Hopi identity after McLaughlin was accused of silencing women of color within the MeTooSTEM organization, in 2019.
From everything I read, she didn't claim to be of my tribe until after she was accused of racism, She may have just started out as pretending to be her Bi lover professor, but then she chose to turn her into her " Native American BFF" when it suited her need to show she wasn't racist.

Fair enough. Seems like case cracked to me.
