This is... something. But it's something of some magnitude.

I do not forget past kindnesses. Yoshinori Ono recreated the Fighting Game Community with Street Fighter IV. It doesn't matter how much I liked it, I benefited from its impact in the video game landscape.

I didn't really get into Street Fighter V as well. My tastes evolved. I'm a Tekken and 3d fighter for the most part. I hope beyond hope on Virtua Fighter 6... but I can never forget that I can only hold onto this hope because of what Ono has done for us.

Raise a glass, fellow FGC. Let's see the Gentleman out as a Hero.

Never was into sf4 but the guy was fun and passionate so it's sad to see him go. Maybe he can find more success elsewhere.

Saw the news yesterday, and was not surprised. It was a matter of when, and not if, due to Ono being demoted. It sucks, because I was hoping that they could finally move the story forward with the newer generation of young characters in SFIII. I am now worried for SFVI, because all loose ends have been tied up, and another prequel/gaiden game adds nothing. Hopefully, SNK has a position for Ono, as a lot ex-Capcom employees ended up going there.

I hope beyond hope on Virtua Fighter 6
The closest you're going to get is DOA5. Sega does not give a crap about any of their IPs except Sonic or the Yakuza franchise. It took 26 years for Streets of Rage 4, because the Japanese division actually hates the series, felt it could never sell like it did in the 90s. That turned out to be two decades of bullshit. And they had no involvement with 4, other than handing over the license to Dotemu & Lizard Cube. The only way VF6 would happen is if they outsourced to developers that are big VF fans.

Sega has been in a revival of sorts.

They first brought back Valkyria Chronicles, then they made a sequel to Sakura Taisen of all things, which was way more dead than VF and was never even released outside of japan. The only way to see classic Sakura Taisen chars is in crossup games like Project X Zone or something.

So yeah, there is still hope. Not a lot but some. I think ever since they bought Atlus and saw how things are supposed to be done, they have started seeing the light.

For their sake I hope so. I know about their thing with the Sakura Taisen series. When they get to alot of their old IPs from the Genesis & Saturn days, then we will talk.

I heard about this news and I'm honestly quite sad. Ono did pretty good stuff for the fighting game scene I'll admit and I'm glad he tried to push these games out. Yeah it wasn't like in their golden days where they had a bunch of fighting games all out like Red Earth and Star Gladiator but he still revitalized the genre if not kept it going.

However with this news I have to put my dreams of a new Darkstalkers forever to bed now. Sometimes I wonder if it ever happened; Was this fun game featuring gothic horror icons fighting each other in fast paced wacky combat just a dream? Its sad because Darkstalkers was my favorite thing ever too.

I wish Ono the best though. He did good.

The fifth game was actually released in English under the title "Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love". In fact, I think the Wii port was never released in Japan at all.

Sorry for the off-topic, but I don't really know that much about Ono or Street Fighter. Still, it's a little sad to see.

Pat and Woolie have some more info on Ono that is not positive. Important bits start at 6:36. TL;DW: The point being that Ono was a pain the ass to work with during production. They do acknowledge and appreciate bringing back SF and revitalizing the fighting game genre.

That's a big oof. Speaking of former Best Friends talking about fighting games I remember Matt talking about Darkstalkers and its fate and he mentioned Ono a few times as he teased Darkstalkers a few times but being quiet about it, never elaborating on it. This feels in line with what is said because he just dangled ideas without any context or anything for that matter, leaving everyone in the dark.

I'm not mad about it but the revelation does make sense now that it came out to light. Still he did a lot for the fighting game community so it breaks even.
