You realize my mayor is also police commissioner. I need to be saved from my mayor.
A few questions..
Why hasn't Portland modernized their government? Why has every mayor there quit after just one term? In what way will Sarah Iannarone or Teressa Raiford make it better? Defunding alone doesn't solve the problem because that would directly result in an increase in crime, like what happens on the reservations but much worse due to it being urban. On the reservation where the tribes could not police themselves and had to rely on the feds, literally large white gangs would come in and rape, rob and murder at will and nothing would be done about it at all. All people could do when they came through was to literally flee their homes. I am wondering exactly what will be different for Portland if the same happens there?

I am specifically wondering how you prevent this same thing from happening there too because this is what happens when you render local police powerless:

"No one knows this better than Native women who are survivors of sexual assault. Eighty percent of the reported sexual violence against Native women is committed by white men, who do so with virtual criminal impunity because, with very few exceptions, they cannot be tried in tribal courts. Federal authorities have the authority to step in for serious crimes, like rape or murder, but often decline to prosecute crimes that have been committed in Indian Country. This jurisdictional black hole has created a climate that many describe as "open season" on Native women on reservations. "

That is not an exaggeration. It is horrific and my own family and friends have been subject to this on the reservations, it is a genuine concern that has to be addressed.

Also what is this about?

"Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has asked the U.S. Attorney’s Office to end the federal deputation of 56 Portland Police officers, currently slated to last the rest of this year.

The majority of the city’s Rapid Response Team was deputized as federal marshals for a far-right rally in Portland on Saturday amid widespread fears that the large gathering of protesters and counter-protesters would lead to violence.

But city officials seemed to be operating under the assumption that the local police would keep that status only for the weekend. As OPB first reported, it will, in fact, last until the end of December under the current agreement.

Deputizing Portland officers gives federal prosecutors the option to charge anyone they arrest with federal crimes, which usually come with harsher penalties.

The mayor’s office said in a statement they had “asked the U.S. Attorney’s office to withdraw the designation.”

“A key feature of the designation is that anyone who assaults a federally deputized official could be subject to federal charges,” read a statement from the mayor’s office. “Fortunately, I am confident the Multnomah County District Attorney will continue to prosecute anyone who assaults or otherwise harms police officers or others.”

The federal deputizations threaten to route charging power around new county District Attorney Mike Schmidt, who has declined to bring low-level charges against protesters, in the process angering law enforcement officers who believe the threat of prosecution is necessary to deter crime.

But according to the city, local police were only supposed to have this federal power for the weekend."

Ted has made one good decision, because he knows extending the federal deputizations is absurdly unpopular. As for why they keep quitting, it’s because it’s a dead end job. You do it then retire or move over to lobbying. It’s the Oregon machine’s sacrificial lamb. Portlanders hate their mayors for brutalizing them and serving business interests over everyone else, and everyone else just hates Portland for various reasons.
Finally, plenty of evidence shows that disbanding and reforming police forces, police strikes, or defunding all have a tendency to lower crime, not increase it.

Reforming the police helps, but disbanding it does not. Tribes were denied the ability to police themselves locally, thus as I stated above IS what happens when this happens. It will be even worse for a city like Portland because it will be so televised and widespread, they are essentially putting a beacon on the city for every criminal in the US to come for a free for all. At least on the reservation, they are more secluded and less well known and it is mostly spread by word of mouth, but for Portland, there will be no criminal in the country not aware of it. It will be like a K mart blue light special for criminals. Any dreams of " the locals are not bad so it won't be a problem" are sadly mistaken when others find out. You can also be sure people like the proudboys and other such groups will intentionally target worse than ever so when they know they cannot be arrested and put out callouts for everyone else to do so as well. Makes you wonder if that wasn't what Trump has them on standby for. If this was some area no one cared about it would be one thing, but it is not and unless you make sure you actually have EXTRA forces on hand during any sort of reformation, then expect it to be ugly for a while. If you have a lack of police, if gangs come through to your neighborhood, you would either have to be prepared to fight them yourself of flee as they were forced to do so on the reservation when this happens and expect to come back to your home destroyed, possessions looted.

Any attempts to defund or disband will be intentionally sabotaged by Trump and his cronies to "Make an example out of Portland".

That asteroid is the size of a car. Even if it hits nobody will notice.
I gotta say, Giant Meteor not even living up to his name is so 2020 that we are now in the bonus round. Quick everyone, call out which disaster is gonna fizzle out next! My money's on the Yellowstone volcano; it's gonna blow, but the most it does is a prolonged farting noise and makes Wyoming smell of rotten eggs for the next 20 years.

I have the same impression as I did last time Trump was in a formal debate: he lost. He failed to respect the format and acted like a schoolyard thug, as always. My respect for the actual process drops every time the moderators don't just straight up remove him from the proceedings after continued belligerent behaviour.

So we have a sitting US president who won't condemn white supremacy and won't commit to the election results or a peaceful transition of power. Classy.

The big takeaway from tonight is:

The Biden supporters support Biden and think he won
The Trump supporters support Trump and think he won
Everyone else is depressed and frustrated by the shitshow
Biden gets the strategic win because when you're ahead, no change means you're still ahead.

They need to have a way for the moderator to mute the mic of the person who isn't supposed to be talking. That would made Trump go crazy though when no one could hear him. LOL

And nobody will really care about the debates.

Trump can barely talk coherently and yet is president despite that. That and the electoral college being a relic that no longer serves a purpose other than making red states feel important and giving them victories despite more people voting for the other person.

I put it to you that the President of the United States isn't a very nice man.
No. But he's "domineering", and that's going to give everyone with a fascist bone in their body a little shudder of thrill.

Define "lost". He's playing by different rules than he should be, and they've worked fine for him until now.

I'm a Trump supporter and am not jazzed here. Trump need not have been so rude. He should have been much more laid back, let Biden be Biden, and then calmly and confidently respond. Instead he bullied and interrupted. Very unnecessary.
Biden did not wet himself on stage. I do not know if an adult diaper was used by him or not. So, there's that.

I agree about Trump's lack of decorum but he has condemned white supremacy. https://www.factcheck.org/2020/02/trump-has-condemned-white-supremacists/
"on Aug. 14, 2017, Trump issued a statement from the White House, and referred to “KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Biden refused to even acknowledge that ANTIFA is a movement, let alone condemn them.

EDIT: When asked to condemn white supremacy, at 35 seconds, Trump says, "sure". I fault him for not being more emphatic but I think his failure comes down to two things: 1) He was trying too hard to point out his perception that the Left is much more responsible for the violence the US has been experiencing for 1/2 a year and 2) That the multi racial Proud Boys are being smeared with the supremacy label.

How goes the saying, that like 80% of communication is non-verbal and that is definitely at full display here. Trump is just dominant. Proud and self-absorbed and speaks like he owns the place. It's a charm that people feel attracted to, regardless of the man's dubious stature or repetitive monologues(or maybe because of it idk). Biden is just very timid in comparison. He looked a few times like he was going to cry. I actually felt a bit sorry for him, like he was the bullied kid in front of the big bully.

He seems like a nice guy but Biden is a strategic blunder for the Democrats. I feel like they would have made much more chance with Bernie because of his wit, eloquence and sharp intellect.

Why would anyone be attracted to that? That is the sort of guy who gets kicked in the nuts when he hits on girls. LOL
His posturing is what makes girls want to throw a drink in his face and get away from him. Do guys seem to think that is attractive or something? Trump just seemed out of his element so threatened that he was afraid to even let anyone else speak out of fear, nothing else, sort of like a scared squirrel chattering because he is afraid if he stops chattering for a second, then he will be attacked. Talking over people isn't confidence, it is fear of what the other people might say. He even became defensive of the moderator, like a scared kid who thinks the whole classroom is out to get him. Tbh, he may just be the most insecure president in US history. Lashing out like that is a fear defense mechanism, not confident in the least. He was nervous and afraid. He is afraid if anyone else speaks then they may say something that makes him look bad. A confident man is not afraid of what anyone has to say.

Biden looked fine, at least he didn't come off like an asshole that didn't deserve to be on the stage in the first place. Biden wasn't afraid of what trump had to say, Trump was very much afraid of what Biden had to say that is why he thought if he talks over him no one will hear the words he is afraid of.
