Previous playstation consoles had O as confirm and X as cancel in Japan, but had it reversed for the US as default, but since the PS3 have had the option to change that in the settings if you preferred it the Japanese way or the American way.

The PS5 is getting rid of that and defaulting to the American version with X being confirm and O being cancel.

USA USA USA USA USA!

We are again victorious over the Japanese and we didn't even have to bomb them again.

Seriously though, it kind of sucks for the Japanese market, who have had the controls swapped for 25 years. I'm sure it's going to be annoying for them.

Now let us all rejoice that the proper control scheme was picked and forced upon the world.

I actually never got the issue with confirming with O since I play a lot of imports that have that as the default. It's a very small thing. Also the muscle memory of playing on nintendo systems helps since their confirm button is placed where O is on a dual shock.

Honestly, I never had much of an issue with it either in menus. I did play an import copy of Demons Souls a while back (after I had already played through Dark Souls 1, 2, and Bloodborne), and having it there was a huge issue because not only were the buttons swapped in menus, they were also swapped in combat so X was roll instead of O and holy shit I couldn't get used to it. It was both an issue with pressing the wrong button to dodge, but also pressing the wrong buttons in menus constantly because I actively use the menus in the souls games while in combat.

A dick move on Sony's part. I don't why they even bothered. It's like that time Capcom made triangle the jump button for no reason in the US/UK/EU version of DMC1 on PS2.

No FUCKING way. That can't possibly be true, I've been trying to do that since forever...

Anyway, cool. I live in Asia but most of my games came from the US, so even after years of playing there are times when I get confused. I don't think either option is particularly better, but having to switch between the two at random times was annoying.

I wonder how the Japanese feel about this though? I mean Sony is a Japanese brand, to be prioritizing the West over their own people is pretty wild.

Well, one standardized Confirm / Cancel scheme will help developers in designing their button layouts. A button close to the default Confirm button in Asia will be as close to the default Confirm button anywhere else in the world.

At least now we won't have another repeat of Final Fantasy 15 where the team totally forgot to test their control scheme on non-Japanese SKUs.

The situation where they hard-mapped the Jump action to the X button and the Confirm action to the Confirm Function, which happens to be triggered by the Circle button in Japan but by the X button anywhere else...

No FUCKING way. That can't possibly be true, I've been trying to do that since forever...
PS4 has had this for almost two years now, in Asia regions, not in non-Asia reasons for some daft reason.

Why didn't Sony just do that again? I might have an answer: Cuz Arrogant Sony is back in full swing!

Ah that makes sense, I was too busy to game back then.

Also, havent they had that system where you can switch button assignments on controllers for some time now? Except that wouldn't be reflected by the UI and buttom prompts.

What's arrogant about having one standardized, streamlined control scheme for your entire eco system?

Yeah, you can remap buttons in the OS's Accessibility Options menu.

It's mostly just the button placement for me. I'm used to PS layout, so the bottom button is "yes/accept" and the right button is "no/decline"

But if it's showing up on the screen as "Press X to do this", my brain just defaults to the bottom button. So if it's say, a Nintendo controller, I will run into problems of misclicking. So yeah I'm cool with the idea of standardizing it more.

Considering how much better their consoles sell in the States vs Japan it seems like it was inevitable. Better to have everyone on the same page for basic functions.

It never made sense that the main “confirm” button would be offset on the face button scheme anyways. X just seems to stand for confirming things in general, and O is universal for “off” in electronics I/O devices.

I feel like such a chump. I change my finger habits to the game's preference. I figure that's how the game wants to be played, so sure

One, because it's stupid and arrogant to assume people just "get used to it". Second, Why change and remove the accessibility you had from before? That's not good streamlining; that's just going backwards a thousand miles. Three, it's an arbitrary, unnecessary change no one was asking for. Except for the heads at Sony themselves. This is not the worst thing Sony has ever done hardware or software wise when it comes to the consumer or developers working on it their console, but I'm getting really strong PS3 bad vibes again. With this and to changing Spider-Man's face no reason to look like Tom holland's, other than the cash in on MCU Spider-Man. It just looks off puttng and uncanny. It's like they tried to make it look like him, but enough to not get sued or pay royalties. Beware. An arrogant Sony or an arrogant Microsoft, or an arrogant Nintendo are never good.

14 years later and you still can't get over not being able to afford a $500-$600 console back then?

The only "bad" thing about the PS3 was that people were too poor to afford it and people don't like being reminded of the fact that they're poor.

The console itself was worth every fucking penny.

I've been "over it", but that does not mean I'm still not going to call it out. I will always call bullshit when I see it. Those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. And I see you're about to do the same thing in a second.

In your opinion. Not everyone else's. My brother felt it was worth the price at 350 when he got it on sale. Because when the PS3 first launch, it literally had almost nothing. Not until MGS 4, uncharted 2, and Killzone 2 did they finally start picking up the slack. And a lot of that was in 2009 early 2010. It took them 3 years. Would that statement you made, you've only proven my point. Don't forget that the PS3 was a ***** to the program for and the fact Sony would rarely help other developers prove their arrogance. The fact they say you should do two or three jobs just to afford a console that is overpriced, is spitting in people's faces. It shows how arrogant they really got, and they still haven't freaking learned. You can make all the excuses and corporate apologies all you want. Do not give a shit. I'm never backing down from that. You can get over it.

Technically it was underpriced by about $230 or so but yeah. Chalk it up to an eccentric lead architect with an affinity for exotic hardware being let off his leash and not seeing the bigger picture. Sure it was basically a Cadillac of a console with stuff like Linux, full backwards compatibility and a Folding @ Home research app, but they had to fight tooth and nail, offer free online, and have their first party devs squeezing blood from rocks to make their exclusives stand out enough to gain steam and solid footing again. The clever ad campaign with what’s his name didn’t hurt either.

Kaz and Mark Cerny were a godsend in terms of leadership. Not so sure about Shawn Layden though.
