Or as I like to call it: You Started with the Sequel(s) Before Playing the Original. I've done it, you've done it, we all have done it at some point.

Here is my list games where I played the sequel first before playing the original:

Resident Evil 2
Crash Bandicoot 2
Parasite Eve
- The games are sequels to the original novel, so it sort of counts.
Dead or Alive 2
Street Fighter II
- Everyone's done this.
Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2
Metal Gear Rising
Final Fantasy VII, VIII, XIII.
GG Shinobi, Revenge of Shinobi, and Shinobi III
Soul Calibur
- Yes. The original game was called Soul Edge and was released in arcades and later the PS1. I played Soul Edge after playing SC first.
Gunstar Superheroes
Battletoads Arcade
Battletoads & Double Dragon
Burnout 3 and Revenge
Bloody Roar 2
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Bangai O: Spirits
Yakuza 0
Nier: Automata
Ikaruga
- Takes place after Radiant Silvergun.
Sengoku Basara 3
Dynasty Warriors 2, 3, & 8
Suikoden III
Time Crisis II
Metroid II
Timesplitters 3
Darkstalkers 3
- I played it on the PSP Darkstalkers Chronicles.
Guilty Gear Judgment
Duke Nukem II & 3D
Return to Castle Wolfenstein & Wolfenstein 3D
Custom Robo
Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Ninja Gaiden II (360) -
The former I played at a neighbor's dorm in college and latter I owned on and off to on again. The modern trilogy games are prequels to the original NES trilogy.

Yes, they count as sequels. Dark Souls is Demon Souls 2, all but in name. Red Dead Revolver my bro and I played a lot back in the PS2 days. More so him.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Duke 3d...
Wolfenstein 3d
Heroes of Might and Magic Legends/5
Ace Combat Shattered Skies
Street Fighter, I did play the original but not till much later when I found it in an arcade on a trip.
I'm sure there are others but I can't think of any, I grew up with games so I tended to play the originals.

I honestly don't think this has happened to me. I've been gaming long enough to have gotten in on the ground floor on a great number of franchises, from Pac-Man to Metal Gear to Final Fantasy. (Hey, Dark Souls nerds, did you play King's Field [US version] on the PSX? I did.)

[Edit: Duke Nukem Forever doesn't count, because Duke Nukem Forever doesn't count for anything at all, ever.]

That's kinda unfair. I knew a friend that had the game, but I never touched it. Plus, Demon Souls and Dark Souls are more so spiritual successors than outright sequels. That would be like me saying Cannon Dancer is a sequel Strider. Yes, CD had many former Capcom employees that worked on this game, had worked on the original Strider, but that boils down petty semantics.

If it makes you feel any better, their fan mods and official patches on PC that makes the game bearable and somewhat fun.

I played a bit of Demons but haven't finished it. I described it to a friend who hasn't played Demons but has played Dark Souls as "Think Dark Souls 0 and you've got the idea". And yes, I know Demons came first but going from Dark to Demons feels weirdly similar and yet different. You can tell they're both Souls games but they have just enough differences to stand out.

I've yet to play Revolver but I know there's some reference to Revolver in both RDR1 and RDR2, but it's more like an easter egg then anything else. Unless those fan theories that Uncle is actually Red are true.....

I actually did start out with MGS4. I only saw some moments when my classmates were playing it and knew a couple of plot points and characters. So I wasn't completely in the dark. But I did get to play the entire series in one week, and I appreciated MGS4 even more.

You can play the entire series(up to MGS4) in a week, but it would be a bit tight. Somebody on these forums mentioned doing MGS4 in a weekend and I can only imagine how nuts that must have been.

I think it took me a couple months to do all 8 games, but once you hit 4 they get notably longer, with MGSV being a LONG game to actually reach the "ending".

I started playing it in anticipation of RDR2 and there’s an infamous bridge section I got stuck at. Basically the difficulty takes an inverted nose dive. Seems to be one of the hiccups left from when Rockstar took over the project from Capcom. There’s a somewhat ironic history behind that too -

This series has a common issue of troubled development. Revolver was abandoned by Capcom, RDR1 was apparently not even expected to be a hit(and the coding is apparently a massive mess and that's why it hasn't been ported) and RDR2, as polished as it is, has significant evidence was supposed to have Guarma, New Austin and Mexico as being much more developed for free roam(Mexico, despite not being accessible, looks a hell of a lot like it's RDR1 counterpart aside from most of the settlements not being there yet existing in the game files).

If you’re referring to this, it would seem pretty plausible. But then again,

Somebody in the comments of the first clip might have an explanation for the lack of scars,

WisdomThumbs
No doubt about it. Red Harlow was the exaggerated stories told about Uncle's youth. Red Harlow had hypertrophic scars on his face. Those heal and disappear over time. It's keloid scars that never go away, since they grow over time and act similar to cancer. I've had some gnarly scars, and never got a keloid scar. A fencepost cut me to the ribs as a kid, and that scar is all but gone. A few years before that, a horse ran me under a tree (clotheslined me with a bough and knocked me out of the saddle). That tree left a massive scar wrapped around my forearm, but it's nearly invisible now. It took 12-15 years for those big-ass scars to fade away. At Uncle's age, any scars from his youth will look like extra wrinkles. Except for burn scars, which can cause contracture scars, but those usually fade. Especially on the palm and fingers, where new skin grows more rapidly than most areas.

but any other coincidences are probably just meant to be tall tales that Rockstar purposely left open to interpretation.

Some others I forgot to mention:

  • Crysis 2
  • Shadow Warrior (2013) & Shadow Warrior 2 - Apparently, the modern reboot trilogy are prequels to the original. Just like Ninja Gaiden. Why do certain developers keep doing this? Either commit or don't.
  • Super Mario Land
  • Raiden II
  • King of Fighters '97 & '98
  • Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • Alien vs. Predator (Capcom)
  • Project Justice (Rival Schools 2)

What was before those last two?

I’ll prepare to be ashamed now since I should know.... Oh wait one of them has to be Secret of Evermore.

Technically Secret of Mana is a sequel(at least mechanically and with some themes) to Final Fantasy Adventure but they rebranded to avoid association with the Final Fantasy series. I'm willing to concede this point on a technicality.

Wolfenstein 3d is actually the 3rd(see what they did there? See how CLEVER they were being!) game in the Wolfenstein series, with the first two games being stealth focused affairs known as Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. Few people are aware of this and fewer people have played either(including me).
