Been playing alot of First Person Shooters and finding that gunplay quality can often range from superb to awful. My favorite gun out of the variably large selection of shooters would have to be F.E.A.R.'s shotgun.

Unreal Tournaments Shock Rifle. Best gun in any shooter hands down.
I'm not too fond of Quake just because it's missing the Shock Rifle or equivalent.

Weapons that are also mobility options. My favorite is still the Half-Life Tau Cannon. All because of the secondary fire. Basically, chargeable railgun that lets you rocket jump. Ridiculously high skill ceiling if you want to get the most out of it, but once you can, it's ludicrously OP.

And when it comes to jumping, gotta love the classic Quake style rocket launcher. Tho I also liked the Doom Eternal super shotty. Speaking of, when I played Doom 2016 and first got my hands on its rocket launcher, I promptly did a quick 180°, aimed 45° down towards the ground, pressed fire swiftly followed by jump. Imagine my crushing disappointment when I wasn't sent flying through the air. I mean, why have a rawket lawnchair if you can't jump with it?

I don't know if it's my favourite per say, but there's a special spot in my heart for the Land Shark Gun in Armed and Dangerous. It basically shoots out.... a shark. It burrows underground and you can see the shark fin as it 'swims' around. Enemies start panicking and screaming in fear as it approaches them and them wham, it pops, grips them in its mouth, shakes them around a bit and sinks back into the ground with them.

When I'm asked to just pick a gun, that's one of the more memorable ones. There's plenty of better shooters out there which have guns I enjoy shooting, but it's also a lot of your typical bullet spewers and energy weapons. Do I really like one shotgun or assault rifle that much more than the next? Not sure if I do.

That said in WW2 games, I'm always looking for a BAR or StG44. But that's less because of the game's rendition of said guns and just my preference in WW2 era weaponry.

I love the Nailgun in F.E.A.R. Slowing time, firing off those massive fuck-off rivets, and watching them pin the enemy's head to the wall is so satisfying.

And the plasma cutter from Dead Space, once you've got it strong enough to take off a limb in one shot.

The Red 9 from Resident Evil 4. A nice and accurate pistol carbine that takes the standard pistol ammo, it pretty much becomes a staple of my arsenal once I get it.

Doom Eternal's hookshot shotgun (hookshotgun?) with the flame upgrade, when you hook on to a distant enemy, they blaze up as you fly towards them, unloading both barrels while they explode into sweet green candy...is just a feeling not replicated elsewhere, however Freudian.

Rage 2 has a shotgun that closes the cone into a single shot when you aim down the sights. The enemies go flying over those rails with such glee. My glee, not theirs. It also the only open world vehicle action game that runs 60fps on the Pro, which makes a difference.

Um...

I don't play many fps games but I did recently beat doom eternal, dunno which gun is my fav though, they were all kinda situational depending on the enemy. I guess the super shotgun with the grappling hook was the most fun cause it entailed mobility within the gun and in that game mobility is EVERYTHING, if you stand still for half a second 27 assholes will shoot at you from all sides.

My favourite gun might actually be the Halo Plasma Pistol. It might not be the most powerful or fun gun to use, but I love its utility, and how it interacts with the Halo sandbox.

Its regular shot shoots a green projectile, that deals fairly low damage, but more against shields. If you spray a target down, it will likely kill them, but it isn't optimal.

The big selling point of the plasma pistol though, is the overcharge. If you hold down the trigger, the gun charges up, and fires a large bolt of plasma, which tracks enemies. Again, it doesn't deal an incredible amount of damage (though more than the normal bullet), but if it hits a shielded enemy, it completely strips their shield. This allows you to follow up with a quick melee, a barrage of bullets from something like an Assault Rifle or SMG, or a weapon capable of getting headshots, so you can quickly take down enemies like Elites, Halo 3 Brutes, or Promethean Knights.

From Halo 3 onwards, it is also useful against vehicles, as an overcharged shot can EMP a vehicle and stop it in its tracks, so you can obliterate it with grenades, line up that perfect shot with a rocket, or board it.

Again, its not likely to get you many kills on its own, but it is definitely the real MVP.

I usually find myself scrounging for the Covenant Elite's Plasma repeaters.

Curious choice. I can't recall the Plasma Repeater ever being all that great, and I can probably count on one hand of how many times that I ever actually picked it up, willingly.

That said, I love the design, with the rotating cylinder when you fire. I actually think I prefer it to the regular plasma rifle. Such a shame that they replaced it with the Storm Rifle in the 343 games, which is just the most boring looking gun.

Depends on the game. I like the sniper rifle + XXL scope + silencer in any Far Cry, and I like the shotgun in just about anything. For me it's as much about the practicality of the weapon as it's about the feel or response you get from it.

Now for the unwanted third-person take.
The Red 9 in RE4. You get it relatively early, it has great stopping power in a game about holding your ground and you can upgrade the damage to a whopping 6.5 by the end, which tops the base damage for any shotgun in the game. It also has the smallest clip size and is the slower handgun in terms of reload/firing speed, but it doesn't matter if you buy the stock for accuracy. So really the only downside is sacrificing 3x1 inventory slots on top of the Red 9's 4x2. Always find it more than worth it.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
The one that comes to mind right now is this shotgun I found in Borderlands 3. You don't see the shots, you just see a ton of explosions in front of you, so you can't be moving forward when you use it or you will blow yourself up.

Its hard to argue with the pistol from Halo, just a shot to the head and they are dead... assuming they don't have a shield.

Cannon in Serious Sam. Its a cartoon looking cannon that shoots a cannonball that is bigger then you are and will roll over an almost unlimited number of enemies.

I never actually thought of the shotgun as a good weapon per se. What I mean is I'm with Yahtzee that shotguns are situational weapons that really doesn't do much for most shooters. Even Doom the plasma rifle, assault rifle and rocket launcher are used more often, and for close range you have a chainsaw and punching.
Shotguns have always been the gun I save for when all other ammo is gone, including the pistol, because of just how limiting it is.

1st person: Arctic Warfare sniper rifle, Counter Strike (among others). The green meanie is a gun not only with quality but heft. In CS it feels heavy and the sound effect for firing it is like God slamming his door shut.

3rd person: Talon-357; Mass Effect 3. It’s a shotgun in pistol form. Slap the extended ammo mod and heavy barrel mod and it’s basically all you need as a biotic class, especially the vanguard.

Unreal Tournaments Shock Rifle. Best gun in any shooter hands down.
I haven't played any UT in years, but I remember the absolute joy of zapping folks with the Shock Rifle. Every time I started questioning my choice of picking up a sniper rifle, it would remind me how lame it is after a couple of shots from the Shock Rifle.

As for myself, I really don't know, so I'll give a cop out answer: the fully upgraded pistol from Dishonored/(2) purely for how cool it looks. High Chaos with slo-mo power can be fun with it, too, I suppose.
