I'm surprised you missed the bit about "Imaginary Hitler and a Hitler Youth" as that was like THE point that always came up with any and all promotional stuff about that film.

But yes, the movie is really damn good. I'd recommend looking up some of the talks that Taiko and members of the cast have done about the effort behind the film, and why they did it. It's very interesting to see them discuss the drive to mock nazi's as a form of defiance, and how bigotry and racism can be indoctrinated.

To be clear, I didn't follow any of the film's promotion, just kept hearing the name in discussions; never researched it because I thought it was a children's film, i.e.: "Jojo Rabbit" doesn't really bring "Nazis" to mind.

Oh I get that you didn't follow it, but I mean, neither did I, and seeing just ONE trailer for it, or promotional poster, the "Hey wait, is that a kid in a nazi uniform, and a guy dressed like Hitler?!" was immediately front and center. Well, I DO pride myself on living on the far reaches of the outskirts of popular culture; there's quite a bit that I miss out on for the simple fact that "most people enjoy it." That said, I don't actively avoid such things; I'm just so rarely drawn in by the "latest and greatest" that I've grown numb to it to the point that it could stare me in the face and I'd ask for ID.

I watched Predators 2010 again last night. Probably for the 5th or 6th time. This has, since it's release, been on my list of films I could pretty much watch anytime it's on with anybody. It just hits all the right beats for me. Like Battle Royale, Raid Redemption, Dredd etc. I love these "Most Dangerous game" genre films and this one is so epic because they picked just the right crowd of actors and character types. It reminds me so much what a Predator comicbook adaptation might look like. I maintain that anyone that likes this sort of thing, but doesn't like Predators is out of their skulls. Predators is my Qanon.

Yeah, a franchise from the 80s that has an installment 20-30 years later that isn't awful? That just doesn't happen. Wish they'd gone for classic predators rather than introduced the super predators or whatever, but still, very true to the original. They saved the awful for the next film.

The Art of Self-Defense, which Netflix optimistically classed as a 'thriller'. Rubbish, really boring. Turned it off halfway through and watched Straight Outta Compton, which I've seen before but is very good.

Just watched Leprechaun 3. Believe it or not, a big step up from Leprechaun 2. It knew it was a cheesy movie, with a lot of bad jokes and creative kills, and just rolled with it. This time, they even remembered to have likeable main characters!

All the ones I can access. Peacock (which has a free streaming service if you are willing to tolerate ads) has all of the Leprechaun movies except Leprechaun Returns.

Invisible Man

In this modern interpretation of the classic H.G. Wells story, Elisabeth Moss escapes from her abusive relationship only to find her husband following her somehow unseen by everyone. Moss delivers a great performance and looks believable in the role. The central theme of the movie is domestic abuse and the man is an exaggerated monster, and so is the eventual resolution. Overall a very nice movie. Many of its elements are very much late 2010s things, but that's not to the film's detriment but just something to keep an eye out.

At this point bitching about plot-holes seems irrelevant, but there is a pretty big one right at the end, and that was annoying as hell.

So, this is a horror movie about a family that goes on a vacation, and end up being attacked by doppelgangers of themselves. It starts with our protagonist, Adelaide, as a child, who wanders into a hall of mirrors at a funfair and something mysterious happens, Then it cut to the current day and she's the mother in the family, and weird stuff starts happening. As a horror movie, it mostly works pretty well. It's written by Jordan Peele, and it's quite funny in places. But a sense of disappointment hits by the end when it tries to explain all this weird shit, and the result is so disappointing you wish they'd never bothered. That major fumble aside, it's pretty decent.

Same. I liked the idea quite a bit. While I'm sure he's not the source it reminds me of the Alan Moore take on The Invisible Man where he draws Griffin as a psychopath and a sexual predator, driven mad with his own power. I'd have to watch it again to try to remember all the issues, but it just wasn't as tightly put together as it could have been. Mostly solid, but not a triumph in adaptation.

Agreed, great movie murdered by it's inability to explain it's own premise. I think they would have been better served either by not trying to scientifically explain the origin or just not done the crazy ending.

As is often the case in these situations critics loved the themes so much they glossed over whether or not the movies story actually works (Looking at you TLJ). Nearly 100% of the people I talk to say all agree Us was a neat movie, but the ending falls apart when they try to make it realistic yet literally impossible. Its a shame cause it's like "whelp..I liked most of it.."

As is often the case in these situations critics loved the themes so much they glossed over whether or not the movies story actually works (Looking at you TLJ). Nearly 100% of the people I talk to say all agree Us was a neat movie, but the ending falls apart when they try to make it realistic yet literally impossible. Its a shame cause it's like "whelp..I liked most of it.."

Honestly, this is one of the few times I side with the critics. The ending did not need to be explained and should have been left ambiguous. To soften the blow, I see the movie as a glorified two hour episode of Twilight Zone or Outer Limits.

So I watched Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) while working yesterday and maaaan, this one is gonna eat at me. It's a fable staring Denzel Washington as an activist lawyer with a social disorder which prevents him from working the courtroom. He's basically spent his life in the back doing legal briefs for civil rights and such while his partner represents clients in court. His partner dies at the beginning of the film and his life is thrown into chaos as he's forced out of his bubble to work as a lawyer for a major firm. Having heard it flew under the radar I was expecting some sort of middling feel good film or maybe some half-baked copy of spike lees work. Noooo this one is....dark. This is a much darker version of "Flight (2012)". It helped that I subscribe to Legal Eagle so I understood a lot of the legal references, but in a way that made it even worse because it's soooooo depressing. This is about how weak even the best human beings can be and how rotten the justice system in the USA is.

This is the kind of movie that is so depressing it might inform it's own scoring in that it's hard to recommend it. Like "hey go watch this Denzel is great and you're going to want to drink after watching it"

So many random things thrown at you. So much that is just hilarious. Helps to be a super hero loving nerd. 8.5/10. I'd rate it higher but I recognize that so much is random and silly and not thought out but it just doesn't matter. A silly lark. Disney +. Hope y'all get to see it.

I know, the acting is occasionally overwrought, its condensed and a lot is lost, and it ends about one time too many but, I love this film to death. I really wish I was gonna get a second one.

It needs a second! So many loose story threads!
Great movie. Cannot recommend it enough.
