I would think (for most games) it's to make sure the input is different from your normals. A quarter circle is a good example - say my opponent jabs with an attack that hits high, then crouch-blocks anticipating a reaction; I may want to crouch under the jab (press down), then do an overhead...

CTF-Face comes to mind. Distinct bases, many sniping positions, and good teamwork needed to capture the flag.

I guess it's not conventional to take Asura's Wrath's solution, which is to put 75% of the content on the disc, then have the other 25% as a free download. It would be a total kick in the teeth to anyone without a reliable internet connection, though.

My only shiny so far is a Donphan (good thing I always have a pokémon with False Swipe when I'm grinding). My brother's lucky enough to have had 3: a Hoothoot in crystal, a Luvdisc in Diamond, and in platinum, he rerolled the encounter with Regigigas enough times to get a shiny there.
