Most of my experience with swords is of the two-handed longsword variety, and with those I was taught to defend with the crux of the blade and the guard against the weak(upper half or so) of their blade so it takes less force to stop the blow.
Having a prehensile tail could be useful, but it could also be kind of a nuisance having to mind where it is all the time to prevent it getting caught in doors or the like.
Personally, I'd rather have an extra set of arms.
I figure first off I'd start research to devise a culling/breeding plan to make the species naturally smarter and stronger through genetics, then on to space travel and robotic augmentations.
Although it's been said already, play Dwarf Fortress. The learning curve may be closer to a vertical line, but Fun [http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Fun] is guaranteed.
