Virgil is evil. Some of his sentences go on for lines with multiple clauses and there'll be a verb at the end and you just need to somehow infer where it goes. I do get your point about some of it being formulaic. It's also nice that the rules don't have a lot exceptions like in english.
Latin has some of the most nonsensical sentence structure I have seen. Not only that, in latin poetry, the authors regularly switch out words to meet the meter.

Just because you are patriotic does not mean you cannot be critical of America. My Conflict in the Modern World teacher is pretty critical of America and its actions, but he loves America and says he is all the more critical of it because of his patriotism.
