[POLITICS] Why do people look down on Ayn Randian philosophies?

My parents explained to me that it was the result of how absurd their lives were at times. There were a bunch of Polish movies and TV series from the late 80s which were officially farces that parodied everyday Polish life. However, for many Poles they accurately presented what life in...

[POLITICS] Why do people look down on Ayn Randian philosophies?

I was still a kid when we left communist Poland so I never had a big picture of things, just a child's nostalgia. My parents lived the majority of their lives under that system and they tend to differentiate between theoretical communism as they were taught in school and "The Komuna", the...

[POLITICS] Why do people look down on Ayn Randian philosophies?

Bioshock 2 had an even better example. A company is formed to build a monorail system that will link the various sections of Rupture. However, the project is expensive and the advent of personal bathyspheres (1-2 person submarines) eats into its market. The company is on the verge of...

[POLITICS] Police Officer says Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 'should be shot'

The cop was fired over this. Another cop who liked the post was also fired. It is still disturbing that a cop would think that posting something that would be OK.

[Politics] Poland Government is SUPER anti-LGBT

Unfortunately it is not just politicians. For many people the wounds never really healed. I left Poland when I was still a kid so it did not really effect me but for may parents, the communist system destroyed their dreams. They moved on as best as they could and made a great life for myself...

[Politcs] When your KID knows better than calling the police on someone simply because he's Black.

However, Michel WAS supposed to be able to enter the building because he was an invited guest of the tenant. He might not have a key to unlock the front door but there was nothing legally or ethically preventing him from crossing the threshold. The other guy made an incorrect assumption and...

[Politcs] When your KID knows better than calling the police on someone simply because he's Black.

Can anyone clarify the legal issues here? AFAIK you are only trespassing if you the property owner tells you to leave and you do not. When you rent an apartment, the building's owners give you the right to invite non-tenants to your building. So could Michel be even considered a trespasser...

[Politics] "Pregnant Woman Indicted For Baby's Death After Being Shot"

The primary issue with self defense is that it is preventive in nature ie it is meant to stop a bad thing from occurring. As such without a time machine, it might be hard to show that the threat was real. Therefore we instead consider if there was a reasonable threat to our live and/or well...

[Politics] "Pregnant Woman Indicted For Baby's Death After Being Shot"

"Pinned" is so vague. It can be as minor as "got too close to me" or as serious "she was suffocating me and I could not breathe". If someone is on me and I cannot breathe as a result, I could justify shooting or knifing them since that is life-or-death.

[Politics] Doctor allowed Patient to Walk Outside, wrongly arrested for Stealing Medical Equipment

Did that security guard wake up in the morning and decide to find the best way to get himself fired and the hospital sued?

[Politics] "Pregnant Woman Indicted For Baby's Death After Being Shot"

In this instance, it is the District Attorney making the judgement. The charges were not filed by the police but by a grand jury on the DA's insistence. That same DA also decided that the shooter would not be charged.

[Politics] "Pregnant Woman Indicted For Baby's Death After Being Shot"

Why would you consider that irrelevant? If the case actually makes to court, I would imagine the woman's lawyer will argue that shooting was unjustified and thus the accused cannot be guilty of manslaughter. These charges are based on a legal principle that can only apply if: a) the...

[Politics] "Pregnant Woman Indicted For Baby's Death After Being Shot"

That's part of the burden of proof for the prosecution. They would have to establish that the level of violence from the accused warranted the use of deadly force in self defense. A simpler scenario would be if you try to rob a bank with a gun and a bank guard shoots you and the pulled...

[Politics] "Pregnant Woman Indicted For Baby's Death After Being Shot"

It appears that the woman was only indicted by a grand jury. The District Attorney has not decided yet if she will actually be prosecuted for manslaughter. It does look like a whole bunch political grandstanding so far. While there are sound legal principles behind the charges, actually...

[Politics] "Pregnant Woman Indicted For Baby's Death After Being Shot"

The legal principle is that the perpetrator of a crime is responsible for all the foreseeable consequences of the crime even if they were unintended. eg. I rob a bank and a customer has a fatal heart attack as a result, I am guilty of murder. In this case the legal argument is that the...
