You can ban any word in the English language... Which is it?

'Sir'. When I hear or see it it's usually in some phrase like 'You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar' or 'good sir'. It just puts in mind some self-satisfied tool wearing a monocle and top hat trying their utmost hardest to be a 'gentleman'. Sure, they'll find some other word to mangle - but...

What was the last movie you watched, and did you enjoy it?

Tell No One. It's a French mystery/thriller film (the title in French is Ne le dis à personne). It was excellent. There was an issue I had with it - the actor playing the main character looks and is far older than his wife, who he's meant to have been friends with in childhood. However, the...

Is there one upcoming game you're desperately hoping lives up to its hype?

Another for Dragon Age: Inquistion. I still liked DA2 and ME3, but I know a lot of people didn't, and I'm really hoping that Inquisition manages to restore people's faith in Bioware. I'm really liking what I see so far.

Bioware choices (here we go again)

Everyone who's getting worked up about this - it's not happening. Game Informer fucked up. Bioware is not retconning your Dark Ritual choice. [http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/371/index/17133997#17134097] If they were actually doing this I wouldn't be too happy either - but...

Poll: Would you like it if Gordon Freeman talked in future Half-Lifes?

It would've been better if they'd just made the character voiced to begin with. As it stands, however, Gordon Freeman is a silent protagonist, and I imagine voicing him would cause all sorts of problems for people's conceptions of him - who he is, what he acts like and what he sounds like.

    Your favourite game moment?

The epilogue of Dragon Age: Origins. It was the aftermath of everything I'd done, the sum of all my actions - and though it was only text slides with backgrounds it was the most moving part of the game, because I was imagining all these things happening in my mind. It made me feel that my...

What do you think of rap?

It's not the music that I'll choose to listen to, but I can enjoy it. I just generally enjoy other types of music more.

Rumor: Game Sharing Coming To Steam

Damn, this is good news. There's going to be heavy restrictions on who you can lend to and which titles are available and for how long, I'm assuming, but this is probably as much as we're going to get from a service with DRM, and most games are cheap enough on PC that the lack of sharing hasn't...

Why you should really, really stop buying from EA

You clearly haven't used Origin. I can play offline just fine with it, and all it is to me is Steam with a different skin. And strangely enough, Steam had more than a few issues of its own when it first launched...

Why aren't there more games with female/gay/... characters in indie games?

Gaider makes a lot of good points and I enjoy reading his blog (though he can be a bit rude about it sometimes), but I think he overestimates the effect that a "minority" protagonist would have on wider appeal. It's an issue, certainly, but there are plenty of novels, films and TV shows which...

Dragon Age 3: Inquisition Coming Fall 2014

I'm not judging the game until we see gameplay. It looked nice and it's got me excited to hear more, definitely (though I already like Dragon Age), but there's nothing about the actual game in there apart from characters and the vaguest of plot details. When the gameplay trailer does come...

Poll: Is Chinese hard to learn?

Just a note: Japanese and Korean are not related to Chinese. There's just been so much influence from China culturally over the past hundreds/thousands of years that heaps of the vocabulary is made up of Chinese loanwords. There's an entire division of vocab in these languages based around...

Games you Love Despite Objectively horrible gameplay?

Mass Effect 1. Possibly the worst shooter I've ever played, but it's one of the best RPGs I've ever played too. The cover system is teeth-grindingly bad and the shooting mechanics nonsensical, but the setting is just so compelling that I couldn't help being drawn in, and the story is suitably...

    Thoughts on disabled people

Today I learned that disabled people are people. In all seriousness, though, this is something a lot of people just don't remember. They're not defined by their disability, and I can imagine that it must be pretty bad - dehumanising, even - to be treated like they are.

Why do games always go from Left to Right?

Maybe because the vast majority of us use left-to-right writing systems. We read left to right, and I think think left-to-right as well, and I'd assume most other people would be broadly similar. Perhaps platformers would be different if they were developed by a native Arabic or Hebrew speaker...
