Metal Gear Solid 3 doesn't just come close, it surpasses both by far. Since you didn't specify shooter, Dark Souls is superior also. Also, Deadly Premonition.

Another vote for the Burnout games. In particular 3, which is a damn near perfect racing game.

The only thing keeping me remotely interested in this game is the fact it's being written by Chris Avellone, so here's hoping there's some narrative quality to be found in it.

Deadly Premonition One of my favourite games ever, with a story that fully grips me. But by god the gameplay is crap, the driving nigh-impossible, and the shooting segments so mind-numbingly boring that I'd rather them be scrapped and just play the story parts.

I still maintain that WBC2 is the best strategy game ever made. For all it's flaws I go back to it yearly at least. OT: I'm struggling to think of many, because I don't play too many games post-mid 2000's, but one game I struggle to play now but loved as a kid was the NES port of Operation Wolf.

Well, I haven't gone back to it, but I recently found out Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for the Xbox is generally considered to be pretty terrible. All I have is fond memories of it though, and now I'm scared to go back and shatter my illusion.
