Hype. I loved Fallout 3 but disliked Oblivion (although in all fairness I didn't give it much of a shot, got bored very quickly). I bought it and thought "If it sucks, I'll return it." 6 hours later when I could finally tear myself away from the game I burned the receipt. It lived up to the hype.
