It is always online, so far that hasn't been a drawback. It has an item store that sells cosmetics and inventory space but in my time playing it the marketing load is as unobtrusive as you could possibly want. A small icon (no words) indicating you could get more space on your inventory...
I stood fast and didn't buy Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2 because of the always online requirement. If they had a LAN mode I would have happily bought them and probably mostly played online anyway.
