Personally i'd encourage playing as both genders in different playthroughs. To pick out differences in character attitudes towards them or to see how being female affects dialogue options etc.

There's two games i can think of off the top of my head Fable 3 (in fact there's an achievement for it) and Bioshock (though admittedly i didn't know what to expect so i choose easy difficulty which probably helped a lot)

'Risen' for the 360 it's not necessarily a hugely unknown title but it IS a buggy, glitchy game with ps1 graphics which no-one played except i did. and it's not bad once you get over how easy it is to break any quest at any time by accident
