I want the setting to be as colorful, fantastical, and outright ridiculous as possible, but the people to feel completely real and the problems they face be comparable to problems we face here.

A character's race, gender, sexuality, etc. should only be highlighted if it moves a specific arc along. If oppression is the main theme of the story, or if it's important to that particular character's arc or something down those lines, then it would be a good idea put a spotlight on it, so...

Pretty much this. The series saw its natural conclusion. Why add more? Can't agree with this though. Personally, I loved Rebellion and the new direction it took the franchise. My only complaint is that we were left hanging with not follow-up. Individual tastes though, I guess.

Honestly, I wouldn't even say Dollhouse was a dud. Yes, the first few episodes were mediocre and Eliza Dushku doesn't really have the range required for the role. But those aside, once it hit its stride it got really good. Hell, I'd say the second season was some of the best writing he's done.
