Should you feel guilty for eating meat?

The simple answer that I tend to give is that eating meat and other byproducts of slaughter isn't necessary. As proved by the fact I'm still alive after ten years of vegetarianism, and the fact the OP didn't eat meat until his late twenties. And in fair shape. Since I don't have to eat...

Poll: Bob Dylan - Talentless Hack?

The man wrote poetry and put a guitar backing to it, belting it out in his characterful voice because he wasn't going to trust anyone else to do it. Good stuff.

Poll: Imperial Guard or Starship Trooper?

The universe that the Mobile Infantry inhabit is entirely livable, whereas, as they say, in the Grim Darkness of the 41st Millenium There Is Only War. And treachery, having your soul stolen, mind-numbing religious observances, utterly minimal education, and a lifetime of slavery for the vast...

Warhammer 40000 6th Edition: Hope at last

Tempted to have a look just for fluff's sake, now, given that the last WH40K rulebook I got was 3rd ed... Might just trawl wikis, mind, but I can pay for art and fluff. :D

Poll: You can make a type of technology from sci-fi real. Which do you choose?

Widespread Replicator-technology, as in Star Trek, which would totally remove the false scarcity created by the current capitalist system.

    Poll: Do you floss?

No, I brush. I've only ever had one filling, and it was in a baby tooth. Often I'll pop to the dentist and he'll just clean off a little bit of coffee-buildup and I'll be out in ten minutes. :p

Poll: Where do you prefer to swim?

Pool. I hate beaches and swimming in the sea, and this is Britain, which basically means you can't swim in rivers or lakes, for various reasons.

What do you think of men passing abortion laws?

Abortion should be legal and freely available. If you don't agree with it, don't use it. (Judge not, he who throws the etc...)

So you are transported back to the dark ages...

Steam power, slowly refined, would be relatively easy to reinvent, which would eventually facilitate the implementation of an electrical grid. But someone else would have to work out the circuitry and so on, because I don't remember enough about it.

Poll: Do you think we'll see an assassination on a major political leader in our time?

Attempts are planned nigh-on constantly, I'd imagine, but the level of paranoia and consequent security means that any attempt unfunded by internal governmental groups is very unlikely to be succesful. Before I read the qualifier, I was going to point out Osama Bin Laden, Benazir Bhuto...

    The perfect organism...

Terry Pratchett proposed the cockroach, in The Last Continent, and you can see his point. A bit short on self-awareness for my liking though.

    Tips on Visiting Japan

I think: There's the national JR rail pass, isn't there? And, I've got to say, it's a fair idea to try and limit your spending by taking out a limited amount of money and having the card concealed on your person for emergencies. Also: Couchsurfing's cheaper than hotels, and you'll hear...

Question for my fellow British escapists..

I cna attest to a slightly increased prevalence on the few roads around my house in Essex over the last... while? Few months? Whatever. Regardless, yep, they appear to be back, in so much as they were around about ten, fifteen years ago.

Poll: A question for Escapist readers from the UK.

I'm not partisan enough to care, no. I'm happy being British, when I can't be European or Human.
