Ubisoft vs EA. -Or- The Evil of Two Lessers.

EA is evil, Ubisoft is incompetent. EA just keeps churning along, doing its quiet brand of oppression, while Ubisoft stumbles around drunk, yelling loudly and embarrassing itself. Ubisoft will either sober up and be humiliated by it's drunken antics, or descend further into an angry narcotic...

Old TV Shows You Remember Fondly...But No One Seems To Talk About

Bucky O'Hare. It was one of the first shows I ever saw with a continuity. It had lots of dark moments (for a kid,) and a lot of plot elements stolen from star wars. I think furries may get a kick out of it, although the animation is atrocious. There was a bad guy named Toadborg, who was...

The things we like are just "things"

I believe an earlier poster mentioned this, but the reason for such hostility is generally an identity issue. Forgive my armchair psychologist, but this is my thoughts on the matter. This is the same attitude that generates the 'fake gamer girl' and 'f**king casual' mindsets, and his has to...

Poll: A Song of Ice and Fire Vs The Malazan Book of the Fallen

It's all objective really. I can honestly say that the last two, in my mind, were much weaker then the first three as books. There are actually very few truly long, completed fantasy epics that to compare it to. Sword of Truth, Malazan Book of the Fallen , Wheel of Time being another, at twelve...

Poll: A Song of Ice and Fire Vs The Malazan Book of the Fallen

For the OP... I do prefer Malazan over Ice and Fire as a whole, but that is not to say I find one objectively better then the other. I do feel George R R Martin lost his focus in the last two books, weakening them severely. I enjoy both series, for different reasons. Erikson's weakness...

Please turn in your geek card, sir/madam.

As a geek I fail in two major areas: Firstly, anime. I never understood the appeal and fascination. I have had friends try and explain it to me, made me watch some, and I've read summaries. I even kept an open mind when I watched them. Newp. They have zero appeal for me. Not calling them bad...

Has "A Song of Ice and Fire" ruined fantasy?

To be honest, a lot of fantasy books are/were dross. However, ignoring that fact, even the excellently written ones will have their detractors. My group of friends and I could certainly give you a very good run-down on why the last two Ice and Fire books were lacking. We still enjoy the series...

do you have a job/hobby/knowledge in a particular field that allows you to spot mistakes in movies?

I'm also into medieval and ancient history, but I also study story structure, so I tend to not only notice historical inaccuracies, but also glaring plot holes. Poorly written characters, bad motivations, abysmal pacing and structure bug me a lot more then historical accuracy.

I'm writing an original fantasy/action novel involving magic, mages, etc...

Congratulations on starting your writing adventure. You seem to be primarily concerned in the case of the tone of your narrative, and I think you answered your own question. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' form of tone, except in the execution of it. If your tone does not match the story you...

    The Failure of 'Dark' Fantasy

My definition of 'Dark Fantasy' has always been in alignment with what Wikipedia and TV Tropes have been, Fantasy with horror elements, such as shocking portrayals of blood/gore, and darker elements, such as depraved sorcerers, truly evil demons, the unpleasant aspects of human sexuality, and...

    Neverwinter nights 1 & 2 question

I agree with the opinions that you can skip NWN1. However if you do wish to play it, play the first and second expansions. They work well together, and it makes for a decent narrative. NWN2's main campaign is a long, tongue-in-cheek campaign that has enjoyable moments, and some terrible...

    Dragon Age, looking towards Inquisition

I always look at it story-wise. Dragon Age 1 was rather generic; the standard, 'only you can stop the forces of evil/save the world,' plot. However I never got the impression that said plot was what Bioware's writers really wanted. I think they had it mainly because it was expected, and what...

Let's talk about DotA 2 and its balancing issues.

I would agree with the other three posters here. A lot of your problem stems from your own side not doing enough to counter the picks from the enemy. Picks like Riki, Sniper, and Drow are easily countered if people on your team know what they are doing. Dota is a team based game, and if your...

Thief Introduces The Queen of the Beggars

But remember, this is a reboot, not a sequel. So none of the events of Thief 1, 2 and Deadly Shadows happened according to this game. So Keepers could still be about. Unless this reboot removes Keepers, Pagans, Hammerites, and whatnot, and replaces them with it's own lineup. Wait, if that is...

Poll: Do you sit/squat in the shower?

I once fainted in a shower, and woke up sitting at the bottom of it. Does that count?
