The first two pages of the magazine are, I have to say, pretty ugly compared to the rest. For a magazine that always has visually engaging articles the first actual content is a little bit of a turn off. The red titles don't really work well against the drab gray, and it all looks just plain...
I used to play EV: Override on my cousin's old Mac. Running missions for hours to get an awesome ship, then seeing an even cooler one within 10 minutes of my purchase... it really did make it feel like there was a whole universe in that old beige box.
edit: I think one of the main reasons...
I don't know if a standard format is really likely. Something like a video is just pure data, and can be easily made playable on any video player. Dealing with computer code is not as cut and dry.
The future will bring a resurgence of the arcade, but in a different way. Experiencing...
