ACG's impressions on Shadows.

  • Combat works for Yasuke.
  • Stealth is good and you can now go prone. Animations don't reset when grabbing loot, so that's a good thing.
  • You can use grappling hook for explorations and assassinating as Naoe.
  • Parkour works, is different, but works better. Yasuke has some parkour, but not to the extent of Naoe.
  • Naoe is about speed and agility and Yasuke is more of a walking tank.
  • There are dodge and attack cancels you can pull off as Yasuke.
  • Game looks great with only minor graphical glitches.
  • Voice acting seems a little rough in English. There is a full Japanese dub for those interested.
  • ACG does like the story.
  • Pleasantly surprised, and is so much better than Valhalla by a huge amount. Stealth and parkour has been improved.
  • Story feels a bit lacking to him.

I haven't been able to watch/listen to any vids yet but just seeing youtube titles I'm seeing negative impressions from InsiderGames and SkillUp.

Further thoughts in the hot takes thread....

Skill Up is also not having fun with the game. I don't think it's looking great, but I didn't expect it too with the delays and backlash tbh.

Easy Allies is loving Shadows, and I am not shocked.

Fascinating how all three reviews posted so far are quite different.

Personally, feelings have not changed. Combat as either of them looks pretty ass, and stealth can only be done by Naoe.

But just because it's Japan, I think I'd consider playing this a few years from now. Whereas the last three have no real appeal at all.

The franchise has been around so long that everyone has a very strong opinion about what the game should be, and their reaction is in relation to that.

Apparently, more controversy is happening.

Since the reveal of Assassin's Creed Shadows, it has been engulfed in controversy. In fact, it was quickly engulfed by the ongoing and growing culture war in gaming. The points of contention with the new Assassin's Creed game have been many, and the latest involves some new gameplay footage that has been going viral. More specifically the footage has amassed over 20 million views in 24 hours. And it has not amassed this many views because it is blowing away fans or due to a comedic moment, but in the spirit of Assassin's Creed Shadows so far, because it is stirring up division.

The footage shows one of the game's two protagonists setting waste to a religious site in the game, which is set in Japan, for those out of the loop. And some have taken umbrage with this.

Of course, religion and cultural heritage are sensitive subjects, though a part of most Assassin's Creed games. In other words, this footage — which can be seen here — isn't all that surprising, but it is nonetheless not sitting well with some.

Others have defended the content of footage though, noting this is nothing new for Assassin's Creed or video games in general. To this end, one commenter references how in Assassin's Creed 2 one of the antagonists of the story, who you end up taking down, is a literal Pope. Meanwhile, another commenter points out how in Assassin's Creed Valhalla players can pillage monasteries and slay Monks in the process.

Regardless of which side is right and which is wrong, the point remains that Assassin's Creed Shadows once again finds itself in the headlines and getting attention for all of the wrong reasons. Some say all press is good press, but that has not been the case for other games engulfed in the developing culture war in gaming so far
At this point, people are finding/making excuses to hate this game or overreact on the backlash. If anybody wants to play it they will play. If they don't, then they can happily find something else to play.

It sounds like your average AC game. You know what to expect and you know whether it's something you're into.

I know if I downloaded it I'd start, play it for about 15 hours and then get bored of it. Which is what happened with Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla
That's what happened with me at Ass Creed 2. The first game was nice enough, certainly something different, but the cludgy combat got old pretty quick; when the next game was basically more of that, I turned my nose up. Then they started to release damn near a title a year, and I came to hate the franchise (as well documented on this site in various threads.) Black Flag was the outlier; the pirate stuff was amazing and made for a great game for everything dissimilar to the previous iterations, but as far as I can tell, they've not stepped that far away from their tired formula since. It feels very intentional that they hold off on the effort and innovation given the name will $ell regardless, i.e.: why try when you don't have to?

I have not touched this franchise since II & Brotherhood. Both of which I enjoyed. Black Flag I played some with my older brother, but he loves the shit out of it.

Black Flag is an incredible game, it's only ever hindered by all the typical Ass Creed shit that happens in between the pirating shit. I got really into it, even the mobile app that allowed you to pirate whilst away from your console/PC. It was a lot of fun and actually gave me a little optimism that Ubisoft had even gotten tired of the old formula, but nope; they jumped right back in line, and haven't innovated with the IP much since, so I haven't bothered with it either.
