I'm a little over 10 hours into Elden Ring. Here're my first impressions:

This is the most welcoming FromSoft game I've ever played. A small part of it might be, I've already played a few. But I don't remember any of them ever pausing the game to pop out a window explaining what I just picked up and how it's gonna be. Or asking me if I'd like to spawn back a little closer to where YOU DIED. Or reducing fall damage to an email that goes straight to your spam folder.

Some of it comes courtesy of being an open world. Stuff like a dedicated jump button, or not consuming stamina when you run. Even your horsey doesn't take up stamina. And all the bonfires/sites of grace, which coat the map and allow instant fast travel. You don't even have to be near one to do it - just go to the map, clack your shoes together and say "There's no place like Stormhill Shack".

Also featured: the most ridiculously generous parry mechanic I've ever encountered. Parrying usually means blocking at the precise moment an enemy attack makes contact. Here it just means your shield was up, therefore you're legally entitled to win the fight with your next heavy attack.

I will say it's a little hard to gauge your progress. Again it's the open world thing. You can pick any direction and be anywhere within just a few hours of starting the game, so it's hard to tell how much headway I'm making or indeed if I'm still splashing around the kiddie pool. Especially when I *just* got invited to what I think is supposed to be the game's Nexus/Firelink Shrine.

Bosses have been mostly easy. They all feel more like mid bosses at the end of bargain bin dungeons. I haven't really met any Master of Their Domain yet, like you expect at the end of a big area. But maybe it's the kiddie pool thing, or the fact that I haven't actually reached the end of anything yet, or even any area bigger than a couple of tunnels/caves. I miss the castles, courtyards, ramparts. Gorgeous scenery though, anywhere you look up.

Magic unexplored so far other than summoning a pack of wolves whenever the screen says I'm allowed to + I remember that's a thing. I also forget about crafting (just throwing darts) and upgrading stuff in general because I don't want to waste materials on something that's gonna get replaced as soon as I find a better alternative.

That’s technically just the guard counter mechanic. The true “parry” is still generally more risk than reward at worst, or contextually beneficial at best like past games. Like just hacking away will typically do more dps but parrying in a mob will give you generous i-frames during the riposte.

Best open world tip is just *look everywhere*. Like, skipping whole dungeons is a thing if you go off the beaten path (which if you look closely at new grace sites the aura kinda points towards the main progression direction). There are a lot of built in audio-visual cues to where points of interest might be.

Question about the Ashes of War, do they go away whenever I use them on an item, or do I keep them forever and can just toggle what special skill I want to give a particular weapon? From a site of grace.

Whatever found is kept, and can be swapped at grace sites or duplicated at the roundtable smither to apply to multiple weapons. Spirit ashes (with the bell) can only be used in certain areas noted by the icon in the screen corner, and just cost a bit of HP or MP to activate.

One other thought, a lot of people may think crafting is pointless when you have magic or these ashes, but it’s so easy to collect the ingredients especially on Torrent that they’re almost like free resources once you get the cookbooks. Stuff like greases, bombs, pots, arrows, etc. are easy to accumulate. I typically would just go to the crafting tab every so often and see what is available, then it’s there to use if you want to. Never know what might be helpful in a pinch.

I tried to do a Hard run with Douglas Bild in RBX, but I ran into another game soft lock. I noticed this shit happens when you do a super move on the boss Juliet and you're at the edge of a screen. It hasn't happened often, but it happened on two different playthroughs. So this game needs more polish put into it. So instead, I went to Final Vendetta and wen with an almost no death run to clear my head for a 1/2 hour.

You will eventually meet bosses that 'heavy shield > guard counter' won't reliably work against anymore, either because they're too mobile to hit with the guard counter, they break your stamina meter and stagger you with certain attacks, or the guard counter just doesn't stagger them. It's a useful strat for getting started, but don't over-rely on it. Even then, though, don't forget about it either; you might find it coming in handy again at some point, especially against regular enemies, human-sized bosses or NPC invaders.

tl;dr: it's a tool in your toolbox, not a one-size-fits-all silver bullet.

I completed my Douglas Build run yesterday. Fun character, but Lord J is still the better heavy set grappler character.

Beat Margit on my first try! Don't know if I should be going through Stormveil Castle or continuing to faff about Limgrave. Currently Lv 32, rocking a Claymore +4. I think I'm all done with Weeping Peninsula (the Morne chapter anyway), and my experience around Caelia so far has been that I should come back later. Still haven't tried fighting the lake dragon. Also got curb stomped by a boss in one of the evergaol thingies.

*cough* Caelid might be worth exploring a tiny bit if you happen to like Berserk *cough*

Took me two tries, but I cleared Boss Rush Mode with Kahlua in Rushing Beat X. Clear it is 24 minutes and 19 seconds. I don't think I am going to get a faster time than this with the other characters. What they do throw at you is some bullshit at the end, but if you know how space the bosses out properly and juggle them, it's not too bad. They at least give you healing items to endure. This game clearly needs a survival mode and versus mode for the hell of it, because I am not gonna do that mode again for long time, aside from maybe Kazan and Wendy.

Also made easier by just hopping on Torrent and making passes by some places. Warning, the central swampy area will stir up a phantom but @Johnny Novgorod is probably leveled enough for it.

Plus, in the northeast area the big old dragon on its deathbed will yield quite a few runes. You don’t have to spend a lot of time hacking away at it if you can defeat the surrounding smaller minions quicker, but there’s an added risk. Just activate the grace at the nearby fort first.

I've been surprised at how generous the grace areas are. With Torrent, it doesn't seem like I'll ever end up too far from where I went down.
Out in the open world, yeah, absolutely.
Inside the so-called legacy dungeons I've had a couple of dicey runbacks where I was close to losing a level up's worth of runes.

Speaking of which, getting to explore a legacy dungeon, unlocking shortcuts and dropping precariously onto beams is what finally made this feel like a FromSoft game. Immediate 10/10.

Waitaminute…you’re playing this too…the wolf who’s routinely said he’d never touch a torturous FROM game?

I unlocked the loaded trophy for RBX. I got the 10,000 fully collected. Next is the character epilogues. I should have only two character left to unlock that trophy. I will just use level select and make it quick.

Well, I kept being told how this was the most accessible Souls-like FromSoft had ever released, and my main complaint about the genre is how you're basically expected to slam your face into a brick wall until you figure out the one way the devs intended you to take on every encounter.

Ahh ok. Well the good thing is that now there’s more ways than ever to help prevent that, but it’s still up to the player to find them (or look up Fextra).
