As a fuel source, burning orphans yields a far cleaner, efficient energy to power doomsday devices. I was sad to see them go to waste here.

I'm totally fine with that as long as Erin doesn't have to play the second half of the game over and over again until its evil intentions are revealed. No wait, I'm fine with Erin going all loopy, I just don't want to see it unless it's an entertaining kind of loopy.

Or do what real dictatorships do: kidnap them at a young age, bring them up with military training and brainwashing and eventually they will have no humanity, morality or regard for their own lives with exceptional combat skills. these are actual North-Korean tactics. there is an entire segment of the army made of orphan killing machines. A South-Korean intelligence report showed that injured SOF (special operations forces) some times voulenteer to be put down as not to slow down the mission

Just going to point this out because it bugs me when people complain about this. "Playing the game over and over again" was completely optional in bravely default... you could have skipped that entire chapter if you had ever tried to overcharge one of the crystals by just not stopping when you were told to.

Just going to point this out because it bugs me when people complain about this. True, but you know how most players are: missing out on a piece of the game, even if it's basically a rerun, is a scary thought! Explore every little detail before the point of no return, or risk regret!

Seeing this comic the day after playing the first level of Painkiller's Battle out of Hell expansion which is set in an orphanage is just perfect timing. Though in my case the children were absolute bastards who had it coming.

I see the minions are trying to get in their daily quota of evil before Villainous Organization HR comes by for a talk. I think the standard per day is one orphanage burned or five families killed (With kicking a few puppies mixed in).

It's a standard trope of some of the older games. "Evil Empire/Kingdom/Nation is Evil because being Evil is Evil."

Exactly. They fit easily into most complex machines, they eat less, they have no rights and nobody cares what happens to them.

Well, they do seem to be hitting the Grand List of Console RPG cliches pretty hard so far. http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html

Though there are major shout outs to a few of the FF games specifically(III and VII that I noticed.

Hah, wow it's been a while since I've seen that list!

And despite it being over 15 years old, most of it still holds up. Especially stuff like the Law of NPC Relativity. I hate that law. Also, I feel old now...
