Metal Gear Online Goes Offline

"Snake! Snake? SNAAAAAKE?!"

After three years of service, Konami has decided to pull the plug on Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer spin-off to the popular stealth action series available exclusively on the PlayStation 3. MGO will be shutting down this summer, leaving thousands of super-soldier wannabes screaming in anguish into their codecs.

First, MGO's Online Shop will close down on the 21st of March, and new character creation will be disabled by late April. The game itself will go completely dark on June 21st, 2012, although Konami will be offering all of the game's expansion packs for free until the service completely cuts off.

Originally launching in 2008 with Metal Gear Solid 4, MGO had over 1.3 million registered users in 2009. The game allowed players to create their own stealthy super-soldier and battle against each other in a variety of tactical, team-based game modes.

This is why we need some kind of local multiplayer, seriously people wanna talk about split screen being played out but it's nice to have especially when servers get taken down. I mean they're not gonna be around forever folks.

So sad. If it weren't for my university's ungodly stupid online policies, I'd still be playing that.

I remember going through all the nonsense to play MGS online, setting up accounts etc.

It wasn't worth it, the controls were absolutely terrible for online play.

finally now release MGS:Online Edition that's completely dedicated to the online component, this game is SO good I don't know how people play MW3 or BF3 when MGO is so much better

Return to your positions!

Oh well, that's what you get for taking server control from the paying customers.

People buy new Call of Duty games every year. Do you really think MGO has enough content to keep them entertained for four?

Besides, I doubt the CoD croud would want to adjust for MGO's stiff controls and slow pace (and you know your game is slow when Call of Duty feels like Unreal Tournament by comparison.)

MGO offered gamers something rarely seen in modern day FPS's (If you can call MGS4 that). Actual Stealth. Not just silent footsteps, or long range knifing. Also, the sheer size of the weapons list was pretty amazing. Great customization, great graphics (for it's time), and well done map design. Always a blast. You will be missed.

Awwwh pity, although a massive hassle to get onto and all the accounts and what not it was certainly worth it because it was one of the best online experiences of my life.

Don't worry. I'm sure when it goes offline, there'll be an announcement for a new online game that you can play for a year or two.

I had no idea anything like this even existed! I never expected there to be such a thing either.

I use this game as an example of what to do in multiplayer. (and some things not to do, lol. DAM YOU BAD NET PROGRAMMING) Its so interesting, you actually get into it, instead of getting lazy and dying over and over. Dont think theres ever been a mode as fun and as interesting as Team Stealth.

Twisted Metals coming out, and I got the HD collection of Metal Gear. So theres that....

anyone else have the HD collection, by the way?

Well that is a shame Metal Gear Online was a really good multiplayer game, it was a shame you needed two accounts to play and the fucking stupid download system meant updates took ages.

I would still be playing if the updates didn't take days. It got really tactical at times and was really fun.

I wish I got a chance to play it but alas I probably won't now. Guess I'll just have to stick to MGS4 or Peace Walker, or Portable Ops if it has online multiplayer, but I can't remember if it does.

Never played the game but t'would seem there is enough interest in it for it to keep going. Or, after it is removed, replace it with a newer better model giving fans what they want. *shrugs*

HORRAYY!!! The war is finally over!! We can have peace again!
We don't need to fight endless meaningless battles sacrificing our lives!!

This is the day Big Boss was talking about at the end. The day when you can put down your gun and just live not as a soldier but as a man.
