Footage From Canceled Steampunk Batman Game Surfaces

Here's some footage from F.3.A.R developer, Day 1 Studios', canceled Gotham by Gaslight game.

Remember those menu designs from that canceled steampunk Batman game we showed you last month? [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115238-A-Heartbreaking-Glimpse-of-a-Steampunk-Batman-Game] Well the noble scholars over at Siliconera have managed to dig up a video of the game in motion, and it is beautiful. It was beautiful.

Okay, so Batman doesn't do anything particularly Batman-esque in the video. He just walks around, stopping occasionally to brood a little. Regardless, I could watch that physics-driven cape for hours.

This footage is part of a pitch for Gotham by Gaslight, which would have appeared on PS3 and Xbox 360 between 2009 and 2010 had a publishered picked it up. In the game, a hefty-looking Batman would have attempted to track down Jack the ripper in a 19th century interpretation of Gotham. Day 1 Studios' pitched the game to THQ, who didn't bite. Unable to find a publisher to fund the game, Day 1 eventually canceled the project.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why we can't have nice things.

It certainly looks like an interesting idea that would've been a great complement for the Arkham series.

*sigh* why does "what could have been" always end up looking so much cooler than "what happened"?

Maybe THQ wouldn't be in such financial trouble if it had focused on making good games like this instead of crap like UDraw

That is sad. But it's not like it was in 2007 when there hadn't been a decent Batman game since the NES. This could have been great but it could just as easily have been spunk.

End of the day, I got 2 great Arkham games and am pretty happy with how they turned out so I'm not too upset. Man that cape was wicked though. Would have been nice to see something like that used in Arkham City!

Unf, steampunk-like things ... I desperately want more steampunk genre games and that cloak ... I hope they do a Victorian London Assassins Creed so the Assassin du jour can run around in one of those cloaks. It's making even Batman look smoking hot and he's 50 butchers hams wrapped in tight lycra.

It does look interesting and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. Though when I was looking at batman's back with the cape off and it was all over muscled it...well it looked to me like he had ALOT of tumors that he REALLY needed to get checked out.

But other that that it looks very nice....maybe Day 1 should do a kickstarter like Schafer did.

That was frikkin awesome... Why would THQ turn that down? I thought anything Batman related sold like metaphorical hot cakes :(

Batman looked far too chunky in that vid.
Other than that, the game world looked fairly interesting, although obviously the video showed a very rudimentary build and the lighting and physics were amazing. The way Batman's cape moved and the shadows flowed looked amazing. I second the Kickstarter idea.

I think there would be lots of legal issues with it though :/ Psychonauts is an IP Schafer owns (I think) but Batman's a DC thing :(

Hopefully Warner Bros goes back and looks at this though. They're missing out!

DAT CAPE.
Why can't I play this game? A steampunk Batman vs Jack the Ripper? Why wasn't that picked up?

Shame that it never came to be although with the sucess of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City maybe they would reconsider going back to it?

Because of all of the unknown possibilities...imagining what could have been is pretty bitter-sweet sometimes like, having Jekyll and Hyde instead of Harvey Dent or, Selina Kyle in a tight corset...hmm...yeah.

All I'm wondering is how that game would've worked.
I mean, if it's batman trying to catch jack the ripper I can't imagine there would be too many fist fights or anything. The only way I could see this would be as an adventure game and that doesn't sound particularly fun. But that cape WAS boss. So maybe that would've made up for it.

"Day 1 Studios' pitched the game to THQ, who didn't bite. Unable to find a publisher to fund the game, Day 1 eventually canceled the project."

All of my rage

... on the other hand, here's hoping that Rocksteady (in partnership perhaps) will be able to pick this up as a follow on to Arkham City. It would be I think a more fruitful new direction than the logical expansion of Arkham locations:
-Arkham County
-Arkham State
-Arkham Nation
-Arkham Planet
-Arkham in Space
-Arkham to the Future
-Live free or Arkham
-Arkham 2: Arkhammer

It's no wonder THQ is falling apart. When someone approaches you with a Batman game, you don't turn them down. Gamers love Batman. More than their own mothers in some parts of the world.

And those cape physics!
