Infamous PS3 Hacker, Geohot, Arrested (For Marijuana)

The man famous for his crack just became a felon for his pot.

22-year-old hacker George "Geohot" Hotz, the man responsible for compromising the PlayStation 3's security and jailbreaking the original iPhone, has been arrested .... for pot chocolate. Mr. Geohot, a.k.a. "million75," a.k.a. "mil," a.k.a. "dream," a.k.a. "hax0r," was on his way to the SXSW conference in Austin when driving through Sierra Blanca, TX, a small Western town famous for one thing: a notoriously proficient local sheriff's department currently allied with a world-class drug-sniffing pooch patrol. Geohot was stopped, doggie noses did their thing, a cop spotted the pot, and the cuffs went click.

Geohot holds a medical marijuana license in California (for those pesky headaches, clearly) and as such, was legally allowed to tote around a confectionary treat bag of THC-infused sweets. Sadly for Geohot, as he may or may not have noticed, he wasn't in California when a sheriff pulled a 1/4 oz. of Mary Jane from the glove box, alongside a pack of chocolates said to contain less than 1/8 oz. of the same Wacky Tobacky.

As you may or may not know about being busted for Hippie Lettuce, the amount you have, and the value of said amount, matters when it comes punishment time. According to the report on Geohot's incident, there was apparently an argument about how to measure the cocoa component of his stash; the sheriff used the weight of the full treat for determining value ($800) while Geohot argued that it cost him a measly $15. While the outcome of that debate is still hazy, we do know Geohot was placed in jail on felony charges, then subsequently released on a $1,500 bail.

Before this most recent indiscretion, Geohot had actually gotten away with his tinkering on both the PS3 and iPhone, even after being taken to court by Sony. After that mess, he was offered a job at Google, and then accepted one at Facebook, where he reportedly worked until January of this year. This guy tangled with two of the largest hardware manufacturers in existence, only to be offered a job by two of the most popular websites in existence. Before this week, it seemed as though Mr. Geohot was on a bit of a Geo-hot-streak. Now, after all of that, he may become a felon for storing a legally-obtained chocolate ball made with $15 worth of weed in his glove box. Go figure.

Lol. The sad part is people are probably going to give him support simply because of who he is.

I don't particularly like this guy, but c'mon. After all the shit this guy goes through, he gets busted for smoking them tweeds?

That sucks. For once, I'm on his side.

So... breaking open trade secrets of two major hard/software companies and gets off almost scott free. Carry $15 worth of pot in Texas, and he gets throne in jail... is there something tragically ironic here or what? Also, would this be ironic?

Holy cow, that pun was awesome.

After seeing his videos challenging Sony, is anyone surprised he's on drugs?

Even sadder because he's the dude who probably killed the movement.

Al Capone got busted for tax evasion and O.J. Simpson is in prison for assault (I think). Some people dodge bullets only to be hit by a shovel.

It'll get pleaded down to a low level misdemeanor or dismissed entirely once a half way proficient lawyer gets a hold of the case. He'll likely be let off with a fine and a stern warning. Either way he's spent all the time he's going to in jail over this.

[Obligatory comment about how stupid the marijuana laws are in the USA]

I mean come on. There's evidence that at least a certain sense of legality has absolutely no severe impact on the populace. It's called the Netherlands.

Al Capone was the head of a major Prohibition-era crime syndicate responsible and was found guilty for tax evasion, in that he'd covered up a steady stream of illegal income from said syndicate, and O.J. Simpson, after being found (it should be noted) not guilty of killing his ex-wife, is currently in prison for armed robbery, kidnapping, coercion, and conspiracy.

I'm not a fan of his public persona, but it's not like anyone was ever harmed by him. In fact, we've got greater consumer rights as a result of the suits brought against him.

I'm not trying to imply I have anything against him. I actually appreciate some of the things he did. I was simply drawing on some historical (albeit more serious) comparisons.
