Pokemon Marathon Tries to Catch 'Em All For Charity

The team at Full Restore is in the midst of a 96-hour non-stop Pokemon marathon to raise money for the British Red Cross.

Around this time last year a group of Welsh students calling themselves "Pokemon4Japan" took their cue from the four days straight [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/DesertBusForHope/dessertbus.php] to raise money for Japanese relief efforts. That effort added up to roughly £4000 ($6354) in donations, enough to convince the team to come back this year and do it all again.

Now working under the name Full Restore, the group is once again suffering through 96 hours of self-inflicted, non-stop Pokemon insanity, all to raise funds for the British Red Cross. With just over 24 hours left, the team has brought in a little over £2400 ($3813) and is hoping that a big push in the final day will put it over last year's total. Team member Alice Rourke, aka "smooshie1592 [https://twitter.com/#!/smooshie1592]" on Twitter, has even pledged to get a tattoo of Magikarp if the team can manage to double last year's total.

I readily admit that I don't know the first thing about Pokemon except that there's apparently some rule dictating that they must all be apprehended for maximum satisfaction, but these details about the Full Restore Pokemonathon sound like they might be important, so here we go. The team is playing with a "no reset, no reload" rule, so even if they kill a legendary Pokemon [which I guess is a pretty bad thing to do] or blow it hugely in some other way, they'll continue to soldier on as best they can. They're playing only First, Second or Third generations of the handheld games, which unfortunately leaves out "Vietnamese Crystal" [I always thought that was some kind of Star Trek narcotic] and while they don't want to risk corrupting their games, they will do the "Mew glitch" if enough people donate to make it happen.

That entire last paragraph means absolutely nothing to me but the bottom line is that these guys are putting themselves through the wringer to help other people. So if you've got a few extra bucks kicking around and an urge to do your monthly solid, go watch them suffer a bit at fullrestore.co.uk [http://fullrestore.co.uk/], and then toss them your dough and be thankful it's not you.

Although I think it's cool they are doing it for charity and all, but I just wonder how playing pokemon for a long time convinces people to donate money.

You can donate with certain specifications, for instance, the 6 pokemon which have the most money towards them are the party, even if they're something ridiculous.

Something wrong here.

OT: That's pretty awesome, I know I'd be up for 4 days straight of Pokemon. Doing it for charity would be extra-awesome.

With all respect Andy, if you don't know anything about a subject you are reporting on, shouldn't one of the other staff handle it? I don't mean to offend, just curious.

OT:Good for them, I love Pokemon and the fact that it's helping adults besides making kids happy is great. I donated.

Hey folks, what's a Pokemon? Who's a princess toadstool peach, some kinda candyland thing? Who's this Mario guy? A game about plumbers sounds really boring. What's a Final Fantasy, and why are there 14 of them?

You whipper snappers and your video games.

Nah, my ignorance is counterbalanced by my raw animal sexuality, so it's all good.

I knew I was moved by the article but I couldn't place why I was so eager to drink up each and every word.

"They're playing only First, Second or Third generations of the handheld games, which unfortunately leaves out "Vietnamese Crystal"."

I might have read this part wrong, but Crystal is a second generation game. I'm sure if they found a 'legitimate' copy they could play it without breaking their rules.

What about celebi? They can't really "Catch em all". Mew is easy to get but celebi requires either gameshark or somebody with a celebi.

You need to learn your Pokemon, it will help you in the long run.

And no, knowing Pikachu doesn't count

So what's this Pokémon thing then? Some kind of card game?

Well that's rather harsh. Empoleon has kicked more ass online for me than most would imagine, thanks to Trick Room. Besides, using someone as OU as Thundrus or Excadrill is so 2011, it's all about using Pokemon you like.

Pffft, you think I'm OU tier trash? I play NU pokemon in OU tier matches. Nothing says using pokemon you like than a shuckle and a big luvdisc (alomomola). besides thundurus and excadrill are banned to ubers now.

1. Is it nessecary to talk like your pro? If your a good battler, fine. But it's not necessary to pick on other tiers
2. Hallelujah, they may have fixed OU after all....
3. I am not your enemy...and you don't have to be mine. Please play nice

I was being sarcastic man. That was why I was trying to be hyperbolic. Sorry if it didn't come across that way, and yeah OU has been fixed, drought vulpix has also been banned from UU and drizzle+swift swim has been banned all together save for ubers. So sorry and Empoleon is a pretty cool guy, he takes no sandstorm damage and doesn't afraid of anything.

Text has always been something that completely alters tone across screen, what I take as a rude gesture you may think is a sarcastic, yet clever remark.

Either way, I'm a little relieved. I was ALMOST afraid you'd be about as low as the scum on some "professional gaming" site. I'm usually open to new team ideas (So long as I like the pokemon I am using) and I'm glad to see that my choices are appreciated.

Now you know!

To answer your question a little more seriously, if this was a story about Pokemon (and everyone else wasn't at PAX) I might have deferred to someone else, but what they're actually playing is incidental to the whole thing (and everyone else is at PAX). People who know Pokemon will presumably understand what's being said and those who don't aren't missing out on anything of any particular relevance.
