E3: Kratos Stabs Elephant Men in New God of War

Elephant men and time powers await the furious Spartan.

By the end of God of War III, Kratos had pretty much killed everyone there was to kill in the Greek pantheon. God of War: Ascension brings the murderous Spartan back to kill some more mythological creatures from other cultures, like giant ogres with elephant heads. I'm not sure what sort of mythology that's from, but it's in Kratos' way, which means it dies.

Frankly, it looks like God of War. That's not a bad thing, mind you. You have the fast-paced combat, the aerial combos, and naturally the ultra-gory fatalities. Kratos seemed particularly fond of pulling off the heads off of angry goat-men this time around.

Ascension gives Kratos a new trick in the form of time manipulation. At certain spots in the game, he will be able to restore destroyed scenery to an earlier point in its lifetime, which seems to just be one more tool in the arsenal for God of War's platforming.

It looks like God of War, but that's just how God of War should be.

Ascension hits PlayStation 3 on March 12, 2013.

So now he's ripping off heads AND gimmicks.
Heyoo!

Edit: Whoops! Ummm, filler...ok...that was funny, you are gifted at putting words together in a comedic fashion. I am sure you are impossibly handsome. How the ladies keep their hands off of you is a mystery to me!

It felt new, and yet it still looked like God of War. It's exactly what I was hoping for.

My favorite part of that footage? He pushed a civilian out of harm's way. Unheard of, right?

In fairness, he's played with time distortion before, and since that was 3 games back, he's more or less just pulling things out of the cupboard and repurposing them than ripping things off.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Another kratos war crime, seriously, you should be the avatar of another pantheon like Sekhmet or Shiva, sent to go fuck up kratos for being a massive dick.

Right? I was astounded. The goat-heads throw some spears, two civs get stuck, one panics, and Kratos politely, lightly, pushes him out of harm's way. Didn't turn around and use him for health or anything. Maybe this is one of the prequels where he has emotions other than blind rage, and is still trying to help people. The only other times he's done that are...well, he tried in the first one, but he let the captain die and all the women and children had been killed already. It's baffling, and yet, somehow, refreshing.

And there goes my interest.

Could've sworn this game was supposed to take place before he became Ares' servant. His having the chain-blades indicates otherwise. This made the game potentially interesting to me as it would've meant Kratos didn't have the damned chain-blades or man-god powers.

I liked God of War. And God of War 2. And God of War 3. But my god has this gotten stale. The multiplayer seems interesting, but it's so disappointing that it looks just like every other God of War.

Hmm it seems from the title that Kratos will kill his way though the other mythos(egyptian, middle eastern, and chinese) of the time much like you can in titan quest.

Elephant heads?

...

So... he's moved on to the Hindu pantheon then? Well, that should keep the grumpy bastard busy for quite some time. They got gods by the thousand over there.

I'd play that. He's singularly the most dislikable main character of any game I can think of. Don't get me wrong the games are good, but Kratos himself is a complete tosser.

I haven't seen screenshots of it myself, but the description here makes it sound like the elephant men come from Hinduism. Specifically as avatars of Ganesh, as seen here:

.

If so, this could lead to some interesting things in the series. Hinduism has all sorts of whacky and/or crazy-awesome stuff in it that would fit well with God of War's incessant and over-the-top violence porn.

THANK YOU. Someone who agrees with me. The fuckhead willingly takes the entire world out with him for petty revenge, for something he pretty much caused himeself. I agree we should play as someone else and try to take out Kratos.

I just realised something about the picture in the article. Why is Kratos wearing medical tape in Ancient Greece?

Looking forward to this, I consider the GOW series one of the best reasons to own a PS3. I hope the multiplayer doesn't mean we will be getting a shorter single player, like in AC: Brohood.

"Frankly, it looks like God of War. That's not a bad thing, mind you."

At this point, honestly, I'd say it is a bad thing. I'll hold off forming an opinion until I can see it in action and find out more details, but if it just ends up being more of the same with fairly minor incremental changes I'll probably pass. I love the God of War series, but after 5 entries, the 4 of which I played not being dramatically different from one another, the formula has worn a bit thin for me.

I was hoping to play as Kratos before he gets to be the ghost of Sparta. The pushing people out of harms way doesn`t make much sense after the events of gow1. The only thing Kratos cared about, after getting covered in dust, was revenge and he acted even more ruthless towards anyone.
I like to see the mp more since in this a mission based hack`n`slash is something something new to me and it`s refreshing to see a different aproach besides the usual shoot people online stuff.
