Sony Nixes PS Vita Price Cut Rumors

Should have shown more Vita games at its E3 conference.

In the second round of the Sony-Nintendo handheld wars, Nintendo's 3DS has thus far been solidly on top. The 3DS and Vita had sold 17 million and 1.8 million units worldwide by this past March, respectively, and while the 3DS has enjoyed a year-long head start, that's hardly enough to explain the massive gap. What does explain it is the price: After Nintendo cut the 3DS price from $249 to $169 last summer, sales of the handheld surged.

While Sony has been offering a temporary €50 rebate on the Vita, but only in France - and only from the beginning of June to mid-July - it has no plans to slash the price of its handheld to stay competitive. Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida responded to rumors that the hardware giant would be announcing a price cut at E3, telling Eurogamer that he thought it was "absolutely" too soon for that sort of thing.

"From the value for money standpoint, we think we have a good price for what the system is. And our priority is to achieve the potential through more games and services," he said. Yoshida admitted that cost was of course a concern for potential buyers, especially those who needed to buy a memory card as well, but said that Sony wanted to shore up the Vita's content first before focusing on cost reduction. "[Now], our laser focus is to increase the content and to realise the potential of the system."

Yoshida also admitted that PS Vita owners may have felt slighted by the company's E3 presentation, where the only Vita announcements were a previously leaked Assassin's Creed title [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117640-E3-Assassins-Creed-Liberation-Stalks-PS-Vita] and cross-platform play for PlayStation All-Stars. "I'm getting lots of tweets from people saying, 'where are PS Vita games?' That was, in retrospect, our fault - not looking at every angle when we designed the [program] for the show," he said.

"We have 25 new games, Vita titles, playable on the show floor. We could have spent more time - probably we should - showing off those games coming out this year."

It's a tricky situation for Sony. Consumers won't buy a handheld without any games - particularly in the age of Android and iOS - but they won't buy a handheld they can't afford, either. A $50 price cut across the board would go a long way to boosting sales. Still, Sony is already losing money on Vita hardware sales [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110862-Sony-Will-Lose-Money-on-Vita-Hardware-Sales], and taking a further $50 hit with every purchase can't be an easy pill to swallow.

The PS2 went up against the GameCube and the XBox... that race was a tad handicapped from the start.

Sony had a no win situation. You put more attention on the Vita, and people start to ask if they're ending support for the PS3. Personally I think their only problem was spending way too much time on the Move and WonderBooks. It's a neat idea, but it wasn't worth a 20 minute presentation.

Personally I think Sony's plan for new hardware always starts like this. Like with the PS3, they let people slowly convert by still selling the PS2, and for a while there PS2's were outselling everyone's next gen hardware. Sony's selling Vitas and PSPs, they're still making games for both, and there's nothing wrong with that. Vita will slowly gain more value, release more titles, garner more support than the PSP, and down the line see a price cut.

Again, you can't compare 3DS sales with Vita anymore than you can compare Wii's sales with the PS3. Nintendo's fanbase will by anything with their name on it. Nintendo is also taking huge profit cuts to drop the price of the 3DS. Sony can't do that... actually they're already doing that. They can't do it MORE, the solution has to be different.

The price of the system is fine, the only thing that REALLY needs a price drop are those memory sticks (I was fortunate to get a free 4gig). I understand they wanna make some money back with those mem cards, but they need to drop in price more than the system itself.

And honestly, you're dumb if you expected to see a price drop for the vita 4 MONTHS INTO IT'S LIFE. Because Nintendo did a price drop, everyone has this stupid notion that Sony should do it as quickly as possible too when they really can't afford to do so.

The price of the system is good for what it is. I say wait for the bundles to come before buying one if you feel a little on edge about dropping that kind of cash down. That Assassins Creed bundle will probably be a good deal, and there are bound to be more bundles to come which will justify the cost.

Are Sony making this a thing now?

Apparently (I must've been too young to know) the PS2 had a really shoddy launch. Confusing to design for, no games, maybe to expensive etc.. all the shebang, the difference was that the Xbox launched much later and the gamecube... was the gamecube.

I mean you'd think they would have remembered what DID make the PS2 great was a large library and good third party support. Nintendo certainly has, and Sony DOES have some decent content but they aren't even showing it. If corporations are people, then Sony has Alzheimer's.
To be fair they aren't failing at that with the consoles, but they've always struggled a bit with the handhelds.

Struggling is an interesting word though, considering they've sold more PSP's than 360's or PS3's have been sold.

Although from what I read, the large PS2 library was again more down to the failure of the other two than Sony's success. It was supposed to be awful to make games for at first.

If they do manage to go through a PS3 kinda cycle than the games will eventually start coming, I just don't know why the insist on struggling so much to get to that stage rather than going for a strong start in the first place :D

I admire Sony for significantly upgrading the specs of each console from one generation to the next, but what is it that they're putting in these things that they're always selling them at a loss.

I think that Sony's products are technologically superior to Nintendo's, and more reliable/longer-lasting than Microsoft's consoles, but it doesn't help that Sony runs off into the other extreme, resulting in hyped-up prices, which are still sold at a loss.

I've always liked Sony, but the one thing they've never changed is their stubborn pricing on all their products. Its really your market-strategy that needs an upgrade, Sony.

Look, I like Sony. I guess I'm a bit of a PS fanboy. But not even I'd buy a Vita. Too damn expensive, only like 5 good games out there (Half of them already available for the PS3 for way less, more or less), wants to be a smartphone (OH, I'M SO PUNNY) and did I mention it was too expensive? Seriously, a 8gb memory card is like 35 bucks?!

That thing about admitting it was their fault for not giving the Vita its spotlight during E3 will cost them. With good games, you can sell any console. That's part of the reason why the 3DS is selling so well compared to the Vita. They have better games that even I wanna play. And I don't plan on buying a handheld!

At this point, a simple "OOPS!" will not cut it for Sony. What, you guys new to this? People go to E3 starving for new games and you deliver none. Now you gotta wait either another year to announce good titles and hope that the Vita will survive by then or announce your said awesome titles in a couple of months, when everyone's not gonna care anymore.

Well, I'm not gone to get one. 250$ isn't to bad, but then the price of a decent memory card, and if I want Uncharted for the Vita... Good lord. Not to mention that it's not really 250$ You simply MUST buy a memory card and MUST buy a game, or you just spent 250$(then add tax to that alone) and you've got nothing, really. The cameras are junk, other devices do music and video, and other devices have cheaper digital games. The memory cards are one of the reasons why I won't touch the system.

The best memory card, the cheapest model of the Vita and Uncharted bring it over 400$ and tax just pushes that up. No amount of 'good games' is gone to sale me a Vita when I've already got a PS3 that does exactly what the Vita's biggest selling point does, even better. Play PS3 level Games.

I still wonder how many PSP's sold on the part that you could mod it to play emulators, rather then on the systems software.

Well that doesn't help my hopes for a price cut by the time P4:G comes out, maybe the memory cards will go down in price

I got it with the memory card and MK9 for the same price as the unit itself.

Even if they drop it 60 bucks I feel like I break even and the amount of hours I've put into Disgaea 3 has certainly justified it...I'm scared to look at the played time on that game >_>...

I wonder if they'll steal blame piracy when the issue was there was nothing to play :p.

I used my PSP to play PS1 games after I cracked it, other than 3-4 titles I couldn't find anything to buy for it that wasn't terrible.

PSV has Disgaea 1-3 available, so as far as I'm concerned its got everything I need. If they add any other good games I'll be pleasantly surprised and likely buy them.

Yeah. Why, did they do something different? Wasn't the PS2 expensive? Just like the PS3, Vita and PSP?

Didn't the PS2 use a different media storage device?(DVD) Just like the PS3(Blu-Ray), PSP(UMD), Vita(some card/thing)

Didn't the PS2 have the whole function of playing movies as a selling point? So does the PS3, PSP and Vita.

Didn't the PS2 have powerful graphics?(crushed the Dreamcast) Just like the PS3, PSP and Vita.

Seriously, all they've been doing is trying to repeat the PS2.

The only Vita bundle I've seen, was the Vita and a free MLB game. ... Oh, joy. No memory card and a game I don't like. That'll definitely get my money. -.-''

Yeah it was on Amazon. My friend had JUST bought the thing and then noticed the sale a few days later and told me haha. I snapped it right up :).
