Burnout Creator Claims Need for Speed Series

Criterion will final say on the new Most Wanted onward.

If you ever felt that the Need for Speed series could do with more slow-motion vehicular collisions, you'll be pleased to know that Criterion (creators of the Burnout series) now has full control over EA's popular driving franchise.

Criterion vice president Alex Ward confirmed the news at E3. He explains that instead of having several studios responsible for different Need for Speed titles, Criterion will be involved in every Need for Speed and Burnout title from now on. "Different studios have had a crack at it - it's definitely a Criterion gig now," he says.

It isn't clear if Criterion is going to be involved in the actual development process of every Need for Speed title in the pipeline, or if they're merely overseeing the direction the series. Ward did confirm, however, that the company will have the final say as to which Need for Speed titles will be released, saying, "Going forward now, with Most Wanted and what we'll do in the future [will have], shall we say, a strong Criterion involvement. I'm personally involved in how the cars drive, how the game will play out, how connected they are, and what the features are." He also suggested that EA's original plans to have yearly Need for Speed games may be vetoed: a move that will certainly prevent the series from becoming too watered down.

The additional workload may be cause for concern among Burnout fans, but Ward wants to reassure them that Criterion is still thinking about the franchise constantly. There is no indication of a new game just yet, but suggests that it will take "something big" to achieve the goals they have in mind for the series.

This is great while it lasts. People don't realize that this is the biggest offender of the yearly franchise this generation with 8 games and a ninth coming this fall. Criterion will add a lot of quality where games like ProStreet and Undercover were fairly weak.

While I loved Burnout (before Paradise) and did love NFS: Hot Pursuit since they were the ones to make it, I won't be getting any of these games as I am committed to the anti EA movement. Until EA changes their policies on how they treat consumers I will have to avoid buying their new games.

Does... this mean that NFS will finally get the development attention it deserves?

I know I hate on NFS a lot but it's only because I miss so much how awesome it used to be. I just wish it could be again. So please let this pan out well! I think the only way that can happen is if they go through with the yearly game veto. That's so obviously the way to go. If that doesn't happen then I really fear that Criterion will go the same way as Black Box.

And this also gives hopes for a return of Burnout! If this all goes how it should then perhaps this horror story can actually have a happy ending.

But, I have to remain sceptical. This kind of premature hope and excitement has in other cases turned in to the bitterest of disappointments. I will wait until a few more NFS games come out before I start saying that the series has come back to it's former glory. Right now it all hinges on whether they decide to ditch the yearly release schedule or not.

I have yet to play a Burnout game I didn't enjoy. Yes, I even liked Burnout: Paradise. So having NFS be made by the same people? Awesome.

YES, Blackbollox have proven themselves incompetent too many times as of late. Critereon simply make better games.

Don't get me wrong, Blackbox made Underground 2 and Most Wanted..two of my favourite racers ever but they seem to have lost there touch with they're latest attempts being Pro-street, Undercover and The Run.

I would like the new burnout to be open ended but have the option to customize and "close" the race route so it will be a straight forward race rather than pulling the map every few minutes hoping you didn't make the wrong turn.

My best and most favorite Burnout game was Revenge! Nothing, and I mean NOTHING gets my blood boiling than to see a camera trails up to the car that had the gall to take me out with a bright red indicator showing them as my "revenge rival" that I'm actively going to fuck up, I want back my Crash Modes too, delicious mayhem for everyone!!

So rather than having the Burnout series and the Need For Speed series we now have two series which is pretty much the same. I have actually enjoyed several Need For speed titles and I would rather see them work on what they have that's great rather than make a double set of Burnout.

The problem BB had was that EA had them marching out a title every year. They pulled in Criterion to do HP and it gave BB a chance to release The Run which was a pretty good return to form. By dumping BB from the mix and pushing the yearly cycle onto Criterion its just going to be the same story, only this time we can expect to see lots of Burnout clones year after year.

Yea, the last Criterion game I liked was Revenge...but it's still my all time favorite driving game.
Ever since they got rid of the Crash Junctions, their games don't do it for me...and no that over glorified phone game they came out with a few months ago doesn't count, that was a bitter disappointment.

Funnily enough, that is what I've felt every time I've played a Need for Speed game, I love every Burnout game, and NFS just felt pale in comparison... Maybe I might actually enjoy them now too.

I hope the first thing Criterion does, is distinguish between the two franchises.

Burnout is Burnout and NFS is NFS, not the shitty NFS they've got going now where it's essentially an evolution of burnout but under the NFS title. Sort it out, Criterion.

Just buy the games used. Problem solved! You play an awesome game without arbitrarily forking money over to EA!

Are they still running with a seperate Shift franchise? I do prefer a less arcadey racer, but I can't compete in hardcore sims.
