Scientists Advise United Nations "Raise Shields!"

Life imitates art, or at least retro arcade games, as experts advise that Earth needs an 'asteroid shield'.

A group of leading scientist have warned the UN that Earth needs an early warning system to deal with the threat of collisions with large extra-terrestrial objects, and more space craft to handle their destruction and deflection. The group, called the International Panel on Asteroid Threat Mitigation made its presentation at the UN's building in Vienna.

Asteroid detection is currently a rather low priority of the international community, with only £2.7m spent annually. The system that the panel proposes is significantly more expensive, costing around £68m a year. Improvements in telescope technology mean that by 2020, it will be possible to track the movements of half a million asteroids, of which several dozen may be a risk to Earth. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to predict which asteroids will actually hit the Earth, meaning that missions will have to be launched to deflect or destroy objects with a chance to hit as low as 1% and these missions would have to launched far in advance of the object being anywhere near Earth.

The risk of a significantly sized asteroid, defined by the panel as being more than 45 meters in diameter, actually hitting the Earth has been calculated as two or three events every millennium, which seems like good odds, but the panel points to the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs and also to the Tunguska incident, now known to have been caused by a similar collision, as proof of the catastrophic outcome of such an occurrence.

The panel, chaired by former US astronaut Russell Schweickart, and including Royal Society president Lord Rees and environmentalist Crispin Tickell said, "The international community must begin work now on forging three impact prevention elements - warning, deflection technology and a decision-making process - into an effective defense against a future collision... We are no longer passive victims of the impact process, we cannot shirk the responsibility."

68mill to detect life threatening asteroids? Sorry, that money has to be spent propping up bloated financial & industrial corporations so they keep giving generous donations to the powers that be. Asteroid collision avertion is too nerdy a subject to win votes off of.

edit: Yes they were addressing the UN but try getting anything done there that costs money & doesnt look great to the folks back home

we need to start colonizing the Solar System. That way If earth goes (exception of Solar Natural disaster) Human will live on.

Ahhhh, "The War On Asteroids"
Everywhere in the South people protest on the capitals steps "Asteroids, Go home", and Everywhere in the Southern California you look there are anti-war & "Protect the endangered Asteroid" protests,
But for the rest of us, we could care less, (Except in Utah where they don't believe in asteroids)

Make it so, Number UN.

;)

Anyway, hasn't this already been made into a film?
I wouldnt be too surprised if said films were used as references for both what an asteroid impact could do & how to stop one. Hey, it could be: Modern Scottish nationalism is based in a Mel Gibson film after all :-D

If you really think about it, it's amazing how happy-go-lucky our civilization is. Even when presented with hard geological and scientific evidence that our whole species is in danger of being wiped out almost without warning, no one really cares or takes it seriously and everyone just happily goes on with their lives.

Oh so now you've screwed up the earth, now you want to screw up asteroids too? WHEN WILL IT END?

Just kidding. no seriously, we need asteroid mining operations, and the ability to blast them for resources if they threaten us.

What a waste... that money could be spent on defending the earth against things like cylons, cybermen, goa'uld, wratih, ori troops or Sontarans. But not daleks, they're not real of course...

Make light of the subject all you want, but the threat is always there. Choosing to ignore it or belittle the subject is one way to deal with it, I suppose. A stupid way, but a way nonetheless. At any rate, to those who think 68m is such a big deal, and would be taking it away from more important things... do you honestly think that money, for the most part, is actually used in an effective and intelligent manner? Far more than that is squandered annually than you would like to think. This would actually be a worthwhile expense... for how much does it really matter that you have all your bills and coin, if they would all just be destroyed in the impact anyway? Not to mention what would happen to the human race. But that's not as important as long as everyone's wallets are full as they die, right?

As silly as a notion as asteroid protection may seem to some, it really isn't something to joke too greatly about. Even if the proposed methods aren't quite bought into... something more needs to be done than what is currently being done. A LOT of something more.

i wish it was that easy :/

altho i would hate to be the people on Earth, just left by all their friends and ignored as an asteroid blows em to pieces...

i would rather work on asteriod defence and then colonization on other planets...and then maybe battle class space cruisers and planet busters...and finding those pesky aliums...

These comments are full of win =D

Honestly, we do need it, since even a "small" asteroid set on a path to be a meteorite would kick our ass so soundly it would make the rest of our concerns petty by comparison. But if we can hardly agree that poisoning our life giving water takes priority over the gathering of various currencies, I doubt very much any serious interest will be taken in other avenues that have human survival as their objective. On the whole, it seems we are a pretty suicidal bunch.

Uhh... Yeaaahh.
See the thing every control freak needs to realize is that nothing can stop it.
There are somethings too big to be changed.
People live their lives because obsessing on it would cripple them mentally.
Fix what you can, forget about what you can't. Develop the skills to differentiate between the two.

I think the folks back home would be a little distraught if it had to be explained to them that an asteroid was heading for earth and it can't be stopped because the funds were spent on other things.

Well, the matter isn't too urgent. If we're being honest, until Bruce Willis dies, we're pretty much sorted.

Yes, I know the plot of Armageddon isn't scientifically sound.
