What a waste... that money could be spent on defending the earth against things like cylons, cybermen, goa'uld, wratih, ori troops or Sontarans. But not daleks, they're not real of course...
You forgot the combine, Borg, Galactus, Tyranid hive mind, Forces of Chaos, etc.

Ahhhh, "The War On Asteroids"
Everywhere in the South people protest on the capitals steps "Asteroids, Go home", and Everywhere in the Southern California you look there are anti-war & "Protect the endangered Asteroid" protests,
But for the rest of us, we could care less, (Except in Utah where they don't believe in asteroids)

i will certainly agree that if we have the resources and technology, more funding and focus in this field would be a good thing... if it's possible to avoid such a cataclysm, we should pursue that...

as others have already pointed out, however, the fact is that the world's priorities are immanently screwed up - cases in point being the ignorance of industries' contributions to global warming, the humanitarian disasters and genocides occurring in africa & elsewhere, and the evils of corporate welfare in it's myriad forms... in short, why should this important topic get appropriate attention from the world at large?

but i did get a good laugh out of many of the local comedians here, as i feel that in order to have a healthy perspective on life, you should be able to see the humor in most anything, including ourselves.... ;)

Human will live on.
is that really a good thing?
If you would prefer I could kill you right now? Its is every species 'right' to try to survive/evade extinction. Its kinda like pursuit of happiness. You're not guarantee it, but you should be allowed to do so.

If you really think about it, it's amazing how happy-go-lucky our civilization is. Even when presented with hard geological and scientific evidence that our whole species is in danger of being wiped out almost without warning, no one really cares or takes it seriously and everyone just happily goes on with their lives.
Uhh... Yeaaahh.
See the thing every control freak needs to realize is that nothing can stop it.
There are somethings too big to be changed.
People live their lives because obsessing on it would cripple them mentally.
Fix what you can, forget about what you can't. Develop the skills to differentiate between the two.
Doomsday asteroids are not something that can't be stopped or changed. I'm not saying that everyone should start freaking because we may be annihilated by a giant asteroid. What I'm refering to are the obscene ammounts of cash that we pump into weapons, entertainment, beauty operations, bubble gum... while something of vital importance that the future of our civilization depends on we invest the ridiculous sum of 2.7 million pounds a year into.

Humand Kind: FAIL

I guess that as a species, we lack long-term vision for the conservation of our kind. We are still mostly in the ape-mindset, wired to worry about being eaten by lions, finding a mate and where our next meal will come from. The danger to our whole species that emenates from giant asteroids from outer space is probably to abstract to our primitive minds to compete with our more immediate, primeval priorities.

We would lose to the combine, in the game we lost in 7 hours, the entire war

For that kind of money why don't we fund deflection? On the other hand, wouldn't us being able to leave this rock save us that money...?
