S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Team Lifts the Curtain on Survarium

According to Vostok Games, we've got about eight years until the end of days.

The team at Vostok Games is nothing if not persistent. After the new developer diary [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114643-Rumor-S-T-A-L-K-E-R-2-Canceled-GSC-Game-World-Closed-UPDATED] has shed some light on the specifics of the upcoming title.

Unlike the team's previous games, which revolved around a post-nuclear disaster scenario, Survarium throws humanity against a much more widespread problem: a "mass-scale ecological catastrophe." Mankind has abused nature for too long and now Gaia's vengeance is upon us, taking the form of unstoppable plant growth and a deadly strain of pollen allergies. Driven to the brink of extinction, the survivors are left to roam the hostile Earth in a desperate fight to survive.

Gameplay will be built on five character stats that level up with experience - firearms, physical, medical, and technical training, as well as knowledge of anomalies. The experience to increase these skills, along with the money to put them to good use, comes from a variety of mission types. Team Combat pits two squads against each other in a fight to secure a protective device before a supernatural storm kills everyone on both sides. Cooperative Playthrough missions have you team up with friends in a series of increasingly challenging objectives.

Perhaps most interesting is Free Play mode, which drops 20 to 30 players into a huge map with randomly scattered resources. It's every man for himself, and each player only has one life to reach one of the level exits. It sounds strikingly similar to DayZ [http://dayzmod.com/], and according to the developers, should be "a real charm for lovers of atmospheric adventures."

Survarium has a planned release frame of late 2013. In the meantime, keep an eye out for more developer diaries, and keep stalking the game's website for more info.

Now this sounds interesting indeed, particuarily well timed what with the popularity of dayZ (12229 playing at time of writing)

Might not be S.T.A.L.K.I.N.G. 2, but it will have the same feel. And i think thats the important thing here.

Nice to see an apocalypse game that isn't nuclear related for once. This certainly has me interested as long as they get the micro transactions right.

Im failing to see the "MMO" part of that description. It sounds more like just "MO"... games have had 32 or 64 player multiplayer long before people started thinking it was a good idea to make everything an MMO.

I was wondering if anyone else was thinking this. Seriously, this crap has apparently gotten to the point of simply *branding* everything an MMO, regardless of whether or not even the most ridiculous definition of the term applies.

Also, they're going to screw this up. :p

For those of you who aren't familliar with the STALKER series, they were some solid fun shooters, with great atmosphere and what I called a 'spiral' game play- like a sand box, but slowly funneling you into smaller and more dangerous environments. An impressive horror element, too- tense moods and opressive environments.

I hope this one has some sort of single play option, though, as I hate other people, but I am bearing in mind that this isn't actually a new STALKER game... sigh...

Does everyone think if they flood the market with enough MMOs one of them will be a stunning success or something? I swear there's loads being announced, worked on or released this year.

the developers decided to stick together and start a new project. The reborn Vostok Games is working on a free-to-play MMO....

Ever watch the Old Ghibli film "Naussica: Of the Valley of the Wind"? Its an awesome film with a similar premise to this game.

Though giant monstrous bugs were the more immediate threat, it was the plant life that was killing off mankind.
