The Last of Us Won't Rely on Cutscenes

Naughty Dog wants to "marry good storytelling with good gameplay" in The Last of Us.

When most developers want to include a strong narrative in a new game, they rely on non-interactive cutscenes. And while cutscenes feature prominently in Naughty Dog's recent Uncharted games, the same may not be true for its upcoming post-apocalyptic survival game, The Last of Us. Speaking to Gamesindustry, Game Director Bruce Straley emphasized capitalizing on videogames' interactivity to tell a story instead, saying that the studio is aiming to "find out how to best marry good storytelling with good gameplay."

Straley didn't specifically condemn cutscenes, but he did discuss a couple features that the studio is hoping will keep the player immersed in the game world. One such feature is a "living" inventory system - in other words, the game doesn't politely pause and wait for the player to craft items and arrange equipment. The inventory system itself will also force players to carefully consider their tactics; Straley gave the example of choosing between crafting a molotov or a health kit, saying that the player is "using the same inventory items for both."

The AI, which Naughty Dog previously touted [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118156-No-Co-Op-for-The-Last-of-Us] as being a focus of the game, will also prompt players to strategize carefully. Straley elaborated that NPCs who were banded together would quickly notice a missing member of the group, even if the player kills them stealthily. This keeps players on the move and gives them real consequences to deal with, regardless of stealth. He made sure to emphasize that even in the players' fatal struggles with bandits, the studio hopes to draw the player in with realism. "There's a brutality, there's a violence, but it's not gratuitous."

The bandits, which were the only non-player group shown in the E3 demo [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/previews/9664-E3-Preview-The-Last-of-Us], will not be the only group in the game. "We're going to see the best and worst of humanity," Straley explained, "you might meet other people in this world who have created a unity or a bond and they're using more of an agricultural sense of surviving and they've gotten a hydroelectric plant back online and they're building families again." The player's companion, Ellie, supports the existence of these peaceful colonies - she is herself born after "the epidemic."

As for the game's story, Straley emphasized the main characters and their survival as the driving force of the narrative. He wants to connect players to the game's protagonists, stating, "if we're doing our job right, you as the player feel aligned with the motivations of these characters." The connection between player and character will thus add more weight to players' choices, particularly when it comes to balancing survival and humanity. "If you don't have food in your stomach and you know your neighbor has something in their kitchen," Straley elaborated, "when do you knock on their door and when do you just break it down?"

Im really excited for this tho but I wonder can she die? as in be shot or something? I hope so because that could add a sense of danger as well or used to make you feel bad and then start over from the game over

Snipped for spam protection!!

^WTF is this!?

That's NOT what the the post is about!!

Ingoing above post this announcement is very promising, cut-scenes should seamlessly LEAD into gamely or that the gamely should tell the story so well that cut-scenes are not needed

Something FF XIII(-2) was in dire need of...

EDIT: Idiot got banned so no worries -.-

I am so immensely apathetic about this game. Uncharted was basically like a bag of popcorn to me. Fun and fluffy, when it's over you forget it. This just seems like more of that, with perhaps a more serious narrative.

I know it's supposed to be a survival horror game, but at E3 it looked like it was basically just another 3rd person shooter where you escorted a little girl using uncharted's, if I dare say so, mediocre shooting controls. Even Joel's body look like they just took Nathan Drake and put a different head on him.

It's kind of hilarious how our quoting him keeps his ad alive >_<

The more I hear the more I'm looking forward to. Seems like I was right, that they are doing the apocalyptic story in it's true sense, instead of a cool style to have fun in, dealing with how humans would really feel in that scenario.

It's weird then, because we had all this violence controversy, yet it would mean this game is taking a mature, questioning approach to violence compared to the billion games before where people didn't complain and it was there for fun. (Like in Fallout where you gets perks that make people's limbs drop off :D). I think thats the big thing about violence in video games, it's not bad because it relies on us not thinking of it as violence, or else the games become less fun (like when you're playing Assassins Creed and gone on a spree and suddenly you feel like it hasn't actually been fun killing platefuls of guards and harmless NPCs), but when a game decides to take a more serious tone, that barrier isn't there anymore and we begin to decry the violence because it's more real than it is in a silly fun game

Isn't it kinda sad when a developer is talking about how "one of the features of this game is no cut-scenes"?
Anyway, looking forward to this one.

Considering Half Life did it in 1998, very.

It's nice to see a post apoc game that isn't dirt brown at least.

Intriguing, but it might not be the best way to go at a game.

I'm concerned that with no cut scenes in between, the game will stream-line past it's capacity to be neatly paced. Basically, it will all be happening too fast, and it will all be too intense. This is looking to be a very fast paced and something of a strategic survival horror after all.

Now, I realize that players can simply stop playing, but in a story driven game, you will usually invest at the minimum of one hour to two hours to feel immersed in a story arc. And while I don't expect it to be short, I do expect, as in any story, the highs and lows of a plot.

Uncharted 2 was cinematically as close to perfection in balance between story (by that I mean cut scenes) and game play. If there's anything that combat scenario we got earlier in the year showed us, is that LOU (that's funny) might be a little exhausting because of the weight of the chaos.

The problem is that we just don't know enough of it yet. NaughtyDog seems to be promising glory even while it brings us revolutionary AI. I don't know.

This is just a minor concern.

I am looking forward to this game but the cut scenes from Uncharted were amazing.
The graphics were absolutely beautiful and it was a really pleasure to stop playing and just follow the story. I don't think I've seen a PS3 game before with so much detail.
