Microsoft Apologizes for Big Boobs

Microsoft apologizes for an "offensive" hexadecimal string inserted into the Linux kernel.

I'm about to show you a hexadecimal string deemed offensive by some. Those of you with a sensitive disposition may want to shield your eyes.

Not seeing it? You might have to squint a little, and maybe dial back your sense of humor to the 12-year-old level. That's right, when you remove the 0 and the x, it reads "Big Boobs." Har. Har.

The string, which is definitely deliberate, is part of the Linux kernel support code for Microsoft's Hyper V visualization environment. It was first found back in 2011, but it was met with little more than a snigger or a sigh depending on the reader's disposition towards childish jokes.

Just a few days ago, a user by the name of Paolo Bonzini brought the string to the attention of Linux developer, Matthew Garrett, who confirmed that the string was real and voiced his disapproval at the "boys club" nature of the joke.

"At the most basic level it's just straightforward childish humor, and the use of vaguely-English strings in magic hex constants is hardly uncommon," he wrote on his blog. "But it's also specifically male childish humor. Puerile sniggering at breasts contributes to the continuing impression that software development is a boys club where girls aren't welcome."

This sparked instant debate between various bloggers, journalists and other e-vultures. Some immediately broke out the scare quotes and labeled the "joke" sexist and offensive. Others insisted it was a bit of a harmless, if juvenile, fun. The two groups were still quite happily butting heads when Microsoft swooped in with an apology and a promise that it would patch out the offending code.

"We thank the community for reporting this issue and apologize for the offensive string," announced a Microsoft rep. "We have submitted a patch to fix this issue and the change will be published in a future release of the kernel."

A similar, and considerably less "harmless," situation occurred last year, when it was revealed that one of the programmers working on Dead Island had labeled a female character "Feminist Whore" in the game's code. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112870-Steam-User-Finds-Misogynistic-Joke-Buried-in-Dead-Island-Code-UPDATED] Older gamers may also remember the case of Jacques Servin [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimCopter], who secretly added a bunch of shirtless "himbos" with fluorescent nipples to the otherwise entirely family-friendly SimCopter.

Slow news day?

OR is it just that people need to get a damn backbone and stop screaming 'I'M A VICTIM BECAUSE I NOT A WHITE MALE IN AMERICA!'?

It's just a bit of pent-up frustration that they need to get off their chest.
Do you do anything else on these forums? XD And the Bolin avatar was better.

Wow this is yawn? who cares a linux guy see a chance to make some bones at a rivals expense, so some guy working on some a part of a code for them put something silly in it. Really doubt whoever actually did it was thinking of degrading the entirety of womanhood with it.

I would think their game designers should get more flack, going by alot of female character designs in games.

Go dig up all the perverted stuff hidden in disney flicks over the years, or lest the stuff rumored to be purposely put into them.

I'm saddened by both the fact that this happened, and the fact that this is considered news by anyone, anywhere.

The line is "Big boobs"? Not "Big Boobs are great" or "Women with large breasts are superior to others"?

How is this an issue, then?

Sexist? I know lesbians who love big boobs. I'm sure they'd be like, "Fuck yeah, big boobs!".

I'm just... I don't even...

...ugh... fucking America... We still have trouble figuring out civil rights, conservatives can't get a politician who isn't outright insane or just criminal, liberals can't get anything done... period, the country is 50 years behind the rest of the world AND falling apart...

...and "big boobs" is an issue. And apparently sexist.

Yeah this isn't sexist or offensive...it's just stupid. That's it, stupid. And it shows the maturity of whoever put it in there. Dude or dudes, whoever you are, that's not funny...it just shows you need to be kept away from sharp objects because at that level of intelligence you might hurt yourself.

My question is how this was true. At all. The text could have just as easily said "Big dicks" or "big balls" or any other male body part, and it would have the same reaction.

Are women not allowed to joke about testicles or their own breasts or something?

Non sequitur sure is a sexist non sequitur.

Um, ok. My question, why does anyone care?. Don't you have better things to concern yourself with? You can write more offensive things with a scientific calculator.

Ok, i got that the whole Dead Island "feminist whore" thing was kinda uncalled for, it's pretty crude language just on its own and it doesn't have to be directed at anyone for it to just be in bad taste.

But really? 0xB16B00B5? That's just damned clever and hilarious.

And really? How many "guy kicked in the crotch" jokes do women get to laugh at on tv? I feel perfectly fine laughing at "big boobs" in l33tsp34k.

I'm living in a world where enough people get offended by the phrase "big boobs" that fucking MICROSOFT has to issue an apology?

.....

The joke is funny.

If you want to get all technical about it, it doesn't actually say "big boobs" so if you choose to read it as that it's completely on you.

ALSO....Big Boobs is just two words. the words are not being put into a sentence to state an opinion. It's two words that appeal to a childish sense of humour (I laughed).

After reading the Zombie Island news story I'm more pissed off . 1 in 10,000,000 people (making up these numbers) would look at the code and post it online. Console gamers wouldn't have seen it and most PC gamers wouldn't have seen it.

An apology was not needed for the Microsoft case.

It's pathetic that there are people that find these sorts of things offensive.
