Kojima Productions Announces Open World Metal Gear Solid Game

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes runs on the new Fox Engine and should be arriving this gen.

According to reports from journos attending the Metal Gear Solid 25th anniversary event, Kojima Productions has just announced Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. There's an embargo in place, so we only have a few scant details, the art shot to the right and few tweets from journos who've seen the game's real-time Fox Engine demo to go on.

The game is said to be targeted at current gen consoles, though the developer has also confirmed it has next-gen projects in the works.

The demo is apparently running on a PC (not unusual at this point in production) and seems to be blowing minds, if the following tweets are anything to go by.

"Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes demo was truly amazing, running on a PC at current-gen specs. Wow," tweeted Brad Douglas. [https://twitter.com/kazamatsuri/status/241069939031674880]

"Demo of "Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes", started w cutscene (all realtime), went into gameplay, open world, night, raining, base. AMAZING," said Mark MacDonald. [https://twitter.com/markmacd]

"#MGS Ground Zeroes on Fox Engine - rich detail, open world, and Old Snake is back!" added ItCameFromJapan's Daniel Robson. [https://twitter.com/ItCameFromJapan]
That last tweet is particularly interesting. Though it's difficult to tell because his trademark eye patch is covered by night vision goggles, the character depicted in the art above appears to be Big Boss, not Old/Solid Snake. The old style sneaking suit, dated rifle and the Militaires Sans Frontières emblem on the character's shoulder means we might finally get to see what drove Big Boss from likable mercenary to Machiavellian villain.

What a great thing to wake up to.

Hey, did they use Miracle of Sound as the model? Totally looks like an older Gav.

Calumon: How can he sneak if he's playing music everywhere? :S

Last I heard, they were planning a PC version. So yay!

And could we get a Snake Eater port too? Pretty please?

Current gen consoles plural? So this along Metal Gear Rising and the HD Collection seems to indicate that Metal Gear has completely stopped being a Playstation exclusive.

But yes, great news to wake up to and definitely going to be getting this when it comes out.

In more Metal Gear Solid related news, apparently a film has been announced as well [http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/08/30/metal-gear-movie-announced], with Avi Arad (X-Men, Ironman, Amazing Spider-Man) producing it.

I'm strangely intruiged. What is it, like a MMO? Or have I got this completely wrong?

I'm thinking an open world style sort of similar to Deus ex's, some linear sections, some open world "hubs". I don't think an MMO based in the MGS universe would be good nor work...at all. I'll admit though this is immediately thought as well seeing the title of the article

Open world? Totally needs to take some mechanics from just cause. Snake + hookshot + infinite parachute = awesome

I'm down with this.

I'm curious, though, if this is that Metal Gear Solid 5 that Mr. Kojima announced earlier.

Still somewhat intrigued though.

The ending of Snake Eater already did that perfectly well.

Anyway. Still too excited about Metal Gear Rising :D Can't really focus on another installment already
