Facebook Reaches One Billion Active Users

Facebook has more active users visiting in a single month than most countries have in their populations.

Not too long ago, the world's population reached approximately seven billion people. This is a enormous number, but one that experts were predicting for quite some time. Facebook's growth, on the other hand, has unexpectedly grown by leaps and bounds ever since the social network first launched in 2004. Now Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Facebook hosts a staggering one billion active users, meaning that roughly 1 out of every 7 people on Earth use Facebook.

"This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month," Zuckerberg announced on his Facebook timeline. "Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life. I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too."

Facebook is celebrating with the release of the above video, which compares its service to common technological fixtures like chairs, doorbells, or airplanes. The concept may seem a bit silly at first, but considering how widely available Facebook has become on computers, cell phones, tablets, and even videogame consoles, the company might have a point.

What's really fascinating to me is that the one billion figure isn't of the total number of Facebook profiles. One billion is the number of unique individuals who logged into Facebook in the past month, which should filter out most deceased users, fake profiles, and still serves approximately 100 million users a month. I suspect we've reached the point that bored office workers simply aren't enough to explain away Facebook's popularity anymore.

That's both scary and impressive. If we're not careful privacy will no longer exist.

So, if you correct for multiple and fake accounts, that's like 200 million?

Eeeeh.

So far I've managed to keep my porn preferences to myself, so I have a little privacy there. I don't see Facebook going balls deep on the porn integration thing in the near future.
There's no better way you could have phrased that Smash XD

I feel like that number is a bit misleading. I'm sure many people have alternate accounts. I personally have two accounts at the moment. So the number will probably be a lot less than 1 billion different people on facebook.

Still that's a BIG number...

So M.Z. now has a billion suckers feeding their and their friends' and families' information into his data mining operation to sell to the advertisers and marketers of the world. And he doesn't have to share any money at all with them, because "Facebook is free".

Sigh. My species has SO far to go before it reaches intelligence :(

Have a good solution, don't join social networks. Honestly the only use I see for them is staying in touch with people that I don't see on a regular basis. getting off track, but yeah privacy on stuff like social networks can only get violated on the amount of info you feed them, if you feed them basic things like name, and thats it, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. I remember reading once that there are 3 three identifiers which give enough information on a person. Their name, birthday, and zip code.

Well looks like its true, everybody and your mother really do use Facebook. Better stop posting all those nude pics of you and your girlfriend/boyfriend on it or those pics of you drinking and doing something stupid at a party... or whatever other embarrassing pictures you've been posting.

Actually the amount of facebook accounts is much higher than 1 billion since only accounts that were accessed in september were counted since the 1 billion is for "active". Also in september Facebook closed millions of accounts (Zynga lost 20% of it's "users") for being spam.
I realised that when I said that. Even still, I have two active accounts that would have counted towards that total, and I'm sure many other people probably do also. So I'm highly skeptical that 1 billion unique people use facebook regularly.
