Star Wars Fans Building Full-Scale Millennium Falcon

She may not look like much, but this thing is going to be huge when it's finally finished.

What do you do if you're a die-hard Star Wars nerd with 88 acres of land and time on your hands? You build the Millennium Falcon, of course. And not one of those kits that you put together and set on a table somewhere, either. I'm talking about a full-sized model that's completely accurate, inside and out, from stem to stern.

Chris Lee is the founder and leader of the Full Scale Falcon project, which seeks to bring the classic Corellian freighter that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs to life in the real world. It's a big job that's complicated by the fact that research has shown "little coordination" between the interior and exterior scaling of the ship as it was presented in the films. Using the DK Ultimate Collection blueprints as a guide, the builders have settled on a length of 114 feet, width of 81.485 feet and height, not counting the laser turret, of 24.878 feet.

The project has actually been underway since February 2007, which would seem to cook the time-to-completion estimate of five to seven years, but believe it or not it hasn't fallen prey to inertia and inactivity. The last blog entry, from August, was an update of the quad gun build, and the Full Scale Falcon Twitter account [https://twitter.com/FullScaleFalcon], while not exactly buzzing with activity, is alive and kicking.

I'm not sure I'd want to bet the farm on the odds that this thing will ever actually be built, but the idea is undeniably cool - and maybe she will hold together after all. You can follow along with the Full Scale Falcon project as it (very slowly) unfolds at fullscalefalcon.com [http://fullscalefalcon.com/].

This is cool, but in all seriousness how does anyone have the time and money to do a project like this? what's he going to do when he's finished, live in it? Boast? Smuggle cargo for the Hutts?

Sell tours? would seem to be a sensible thing to do i am sure people would pay to walk thru a "accurate" replica of that. hell rent it out to larpers and let them have a geek fest with it for 100 an hour.

Does anyone know if that would even be legal? I'm curious now.

EDIT: Oops, quoted wrong post.

I would personally hire it out to conventions. Make himself a small fortune, easily covering the build cost in a few years :)

A parsec of course, still remains a unit to measure distance, not time.

So how long until LucasArt's lawyers issue a C&D to them? I'm gonna say about a week.

This is awesome. I've seen people funnel hundreds and even thousands of dollars into detailed (and maybe even functional) R2 replicas, but it's about time I saw something of this scale.
<color=magenta>Shame it's not being built out of LEGO.

<color=magenta>I give it about three days.
Well, realistically it's never. It's not like they're butchering and/or stealing LucasArts' time, effort, and artistic integrity[footnote]I added that last part for kicks.[/footnote] (which is pretty much what the EULA views any form of tampering with their software to be); they're doing the exact opposite in the real world as an homage.

Also, unless it was the Ebon Hawk or something, this would fall under LucasFilm's jurisdiction. Considering they don't deal with video game squabbles, I see them as being much more lenient. Perhaps they could even appreciate this massive undertaking.
Now if they started making any sort of money off of this, then things will turn around fast.

No, they won't stop him, if they are smart, they wait until he/she has it finished then when the tours start, then threaten to stop him for a license agreement on a share of the profits.

That wouldn't suprise me. Still though neat idea and I wouldn't mind seeing it when it's done.

Awwww, man! You should have said "I find your lack of respect....Disturbing."

Anyway, screw this. The Milennium Falcon? Big whoop. Let me know when they build a full scale Death Star.

Well, I'm not sure where their's is, but I've cleverly hidden mine on the far side of the moon.

Uh... I mean... *waves hand* that is not the battlestation you are looking for...
