Ubisoft "Fast-Tracks" Assassin's Creed Film

Ubisoft and New Regency are hard at work to get the film released ASAP.

Considering how many videogame movie adaptations get stuck in development hell (Halo, anyone? BioShock? Uncharted?), it's probably a good thing that Ubisoft recently took action to make sure the Assassin's Creed film is still on schedule. The French developer has teamed up with New Regency, a film production company with quite a few major titles under its belt, to ensure that its Michael Fassbender flick [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118339-Magneto-to-Star-in-Assassins-Creed-Movie] releases in a timely manner.

Working together, Ubisoft and New Regency hope to "fast-track" the film. True to their word, the two companies have indicated that a screenplay is already in the works. "Ubisoft chose to partner with New Regency because they are a talent and filmmaker-driven company, with the same independent and creative mindset that we have at Ubisoft Motion Pictures," says Jean-Julien Baronnet, the CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures. The companies have not yet announced a solid release date for the movie, but given New Regency's deserved reputation as a prolific and experienced production company, the project should start moving along at a brisk pace.

Baronnet's assertion is correct: New Regency has some impressive titles under its belt, including Alvin and the Chipmunks [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328107/] trilogy, so the quality of the Assassin's Creed film will largely depend on the talent New Regency acquires for screenwriting, directing, and acting.

There's no guarantee that the Assassin's Creed film will be good, but with New Regency taking part in its development, there's at least a good indication that it will come out sooner rather than later. Prince of Persia, another Ubisoft series, had one of the best videogame movie adaptations ever [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/1740-Prince-of-Persia], clocking in at "fairly inoffensive." Perhaps it's time to raise the stakes and bring Assassin's Creed firmly into "mostly watchable" territory.

Video game movies.... well I won't say if this thing is ever made that I wouldn't go see it. I'd have to read reviews and get opinions.

Hmm. I can't help but think that it'll be just as easy to fuck this up by rushing ahead with it as it would be forgetting about it. Why are these things never easy? In the mean time, I'll sit here in my optimistic pessimism. It's going to be awful... But it -could- be good. It might surprise me. You never know. But it'll be shit.

Nobody has high hopes for this thing, but it's failure would still leave a lot of Assassin's Creed fans Desmondent.

I for one have high hopes. There's a few reasons why this movies production differs from past failures. Most importantly, the fact that Ubisoft is maintaining creative control, they choose the actors, the direction, screenwriter etc. Secondly, Michael Fassbender as both lead and producer is an excellent thing for this movie. He understands and embodies every character i've seen him play, given the general blank slate that is Desmond, he will bring his own qualities to the character that will no doubt make the movie version of Desmond far more interesting than the video game version.

As for rushing anything...there's not even a completed screenplay yet, they've only partnered up with a production company and indicated that a screenplay is "in the works", that is nothing but good, especially if they wish to retain Fassbender as their lead. This is far better than the development hell that so many video game adaptions are sitting in.

Looking forward to Desmond and Co. I hope that the film is going to be mediocre at least. A couple beautiful scenery shots and some sweet parcour moves are all I need, the plot is going to suck anyway.

Well, I really liked Prince of Persia. And obviously, that movie and this upcoming AC movie have a lot in common. And yeah, rushing almost works out well in these cases. But hey, it could be for the best. Like they said, some movies take so long that they don't even maks it to the finish line at all. So...here's hoping the AC movie becomes a good videogame based movie.

Let us see how well this goes... Bioshock was there before, now we have lost it to the endless void of development hell.

Then again, Assassins Creed has more to butcher, if they do this right, they have a lot to work with. If they do this wrong, they have a lot to set on fire.

So long as they dont try to shoehorn the whole animus concept into the first film and make a good job at idotproofing the way it works so moronic reviewers cant use it to imply the films crap(some reviewers are far to up there own arses to give decent reviews to anything that doesnt fit there none fantasy/scifi bias) it should work.
