Funny how almost everyone immediately assumes a video game adaptation will be a bad movie. Of course, there's reason for it, but this was exactly what people thought about comic book adaptations in the 90s, and look where we are now. Many of the most watched movies of recent years have been comic book adaptations.
Uh...that's a strawman argument. Just because comic book movies have come a long way, doesn't automatically make video game adaptations better by association. Comic books have a much greater breadth of source material, compared to gaming franchises that are limited (in most cases) to two or three installments.
For every Tomb Raider that comes out, there are 10 terrible adaptations. PoP was nothing to write home about. Hitman was butchered, and they cast the wrong actor in the title role. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li was complete garbage. Tekken/King Of Fighters. Max Payne. I could go on all day. []TVTropes'[ [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VideoGameMoviesSuck]] "Video Game Movies Suck" page had so many examples that the moderators just decided to delete everything wholesale because it was the general rule rather than the exception. Add to that the number of planned game adaptations that get scrapped in pre-planning due to conflicts between the companies and filmmakers, and you see why they're mostly terrible ideas.
OT, I still don't see this project going anywhere. After Prometheus and Shame, I sincerely hope Fassbender's not considering the project. If he's playing Desmond, he's not going to have anything to do until the third or fourth installment (barring serious liberties with the source material). Altair had barely any story to speak of. Ezio had a lot of characterization, but he looks totally different, and his story stretched three games. I don't see Fassbender doing this, and I don't see this project moving forward any time soon.
