Star Citizen is Officially "Go"

Chris Roberts' epic space sim project has hit the $2 million in pledges needed to bring it to life.

There wasn't much question that it was going to happen, but today it became official. With more than $608,000 pledged on Kickstarter and $1.45 million taken in on the Star Citizen website, the minimum $2 million in support needed to bring on investors who will finance the balance of the game has now been hit.

"I'm proud to represent this cause and I'm tremendously humbled by the incredible community that has rallied to my side," Roberts wrote in the latest Star Citizen Kickstarter update. "Not just the donations - which have been astounding - but also the stories and the creativity I've encountered interacting with you in the comments and on the message boards and elsewhere. Like me, you have all seen Star Citizen, no matter what you may have called it, in your head for many years... and thanks to your collected efforts, I'm going to build it for you."

That doesn't represent the end of the funding line, however. The Star Citizen funding drive runs for another 15 days, while the Kickstarter has 25 days remaining. Stretch goals for the $3 million, $4 million and $5 million marks have also been revealed, most of which amount to "more ships, more missions."

Roberts also revealed design documents [http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/ships-plan/] for the five "pledge ships" that will be granted to supporters of the game, which describes how ships will work in the game, what kind of weapons they'll bring to bear, available upgrade modules and other relevant information. "Some of this is likely to change during the 3D design and game balancing progress over the next 24 months," the document says. "Despite this they should give a good indication of the relative features and abilities of the 5 initial ships that are available to early backers."

That's that, then. All that remains is to see how much money all you neglected space jockeys want to throw at this thing before Big Finance gets involved. If you count among that crowd and haven't yet tossed your nickel into the jar, you can do so at either robertsspaceindustries.com [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen].

Finally some good news.

I am glad my 50 bucks went somewhere good.
Also it keeps my hope up that big companies wont always control gaming.

Finally an epic space sim. Sorely needed in a gaming industry that is growing ever more moribund. Now back to playing sword of the stars and swearing at my inept pilots for the next two years...

this made my evening, hell yes! ^^

I was going to try and make a star trek reference, but I'm way too psyched.

I hope it's really good and I'll buy it for sure. I didn't pledge at first because it was accepting pledges only on their own site and the project seemed too optimistic considering what he's promising and the amount of money he asked for. Now that there's a Kickstarter project I may put in some money, still deciding.

I heard the good news this morning. I'm proud I contributed to this project. Now let's wait for a beta in 12 months and hopefully an alpha before that.

Can I ask you guys if this game should be similar to the X series? I played X2 and X3 so far, and I liked them, so I wondered if the released info/plans on this game could allow for a comparison, and if the focus will be more on space battles or the economy (commerce, piracy) aspect of the game.

Saitek would be pretty happy too.

Maybe I should upgrade to a full HOTAS setup for this...
I've had that very system in their video for years. I love it.

But now the bad news. Am I the only one here who thinks this will be a pay to win game? Weekly DLC, money bought star-craft (up to $55 for some craft), (I assume) money bought upgrades through a credits system.

And only 50 star systems to start? With new systems added weekly for cash? Dafaq? We can't have a randomly generated universe? Civilization can do that. Minecraft can do that (on a huge scale), Sin of a Solar Empire can do that. Considering the intentions of the developer, that would be second to none for Star Citizen.

Please, PLEASE someone tell me otherwise.

I would like to know this as well. For instance, can we pilot different capital ships like the carrier we saw in the interview because it looks like that with the level of detail (holy shit, they made the whole interior) such a thing wold seem unfeasible. But hey, this game looks like it is breaking boundaries.

Must say I watched a video of Star Citizen and I was impressed. Glad it's now officially happening.

Victory achieved, ladies and gentlemen, victory achieved. Now we need only wait. In the mean time, I desperately hope I get paid before crowd-funding ends. I want to contribute!

I wish I had the spare cash to pledge money to this, but I'm glad it gets the go-ahead and will hopefully have the money to buy it the day it comes out!

I'm eager to see what happens after pledging. Couldn't get enough Wing Commander when it came out originally and Freelancer was awesome

Is there a pic of the 300ii?
