ABC Fast Tracks Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. Series

Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot has been fast tracked into production.

Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. series on ABC Entertainment has the favor of the network's president, according to a quote from The Hollywood Reporter. "We fast-tracked that and we'll see it a lot earlier than the others," said ABC President Paul Lee, "We're very hopeful that's going to go to series ... it's a great script." Likely to debut in fall of 2013, S.H.I.E.L.D. will follow the exploits of the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate prominently featured in Marvel comics and in last summer's The Avengers. An anonymous network source told EW that Whedon is already working on scripts for a season, scheduled for debut in Fall 2013, which were requested because of an assumption that S.H.I.E.L.D. will be greenlit. The pilot will feature Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, returning in his role from the Marvel movies, and star Ming-Na as Agent Melina May.

Joss Whedon wrote the script alongside his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, who are married. That's the same writing team that brought us Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which bodes very well for the writing quality in S.H.I.E.L.D. When asked to elaborate on how good the script was, Lee said that "It's just very Joss. You know how Joss is so high-low? And he's able to be intense and epic and suddenly funny and silly? He's just got that ability to be super-entertaining and sort of super-educated."

There's a willingness at ABC to develop further Marvel shows, said Lee, "We're developing a lot of Marvel shows and we think Marvel is huge for us, there's an opportunity in it for us."

I hope that the show doesn't devolve into a fantasy version of CSI or some other crime show. I never read comics as a kid, but SHIELD seems like an interesting organization that I'd like to hear more about.
What kind of super-villains will they face?
Will they team up with superheroes regularly or rarely?
Will they have to butt heads with heroes aaaaand maybe even the government?
Will the different branches of SHIELD be mentioned?
This looks good, I hope we get to see a trailer for it soon

Whilst this sounds like good news, I hope they don't rush anything and prevent it reaching its full potential. A SHIELD TV series presents the opportunity to introduce some less well known and lower powered super heroes, who can't justify their own film. I am personally holding out for the present day Union Jack, tying into the original Union Jack (sans costume) who fought alongside Cap in First Avenger.

I keep forgetting this is going to be a thing, yay! I can't wait.

Still though, it does make me sad looking at this (and the implication that there will be many more Marvel shows) knowing we'll never get a DC version of this. I wonder if they'd made that 'Birds of Prey' show now opposed to ten years ago would it have ushered in a load of DC tv series. Sigh, they should have made that Gotham Central show. They still should.

But screw the negative, Whedon SHIELD, woo! :D

They better have quite a few comic book characters in this. If the trailer shows something like Union Jack, or Baron Strucker, or fucking MODOK, then I am sold.

Might we see a Whedon show that lasts more than two seasons? Superhero shows don't do too well on TV. Then again, that's because most of them suck.

I'm pretty sure they fast tracked this because if they wait much longer, the avengers hype will be totally dead anyway. Not that people aren't already clamped onto Joss Whedon's pant legs tighter than a three toed sloth with rigor mortis, but why miss out on nonwhedonite viewers?

Well, true (and sad) as it is that we probably won't get any big DCU shows, there's still an entire DC animated universe out there. I mean, there was an entire franchise of interconnected shows, each of them being some of the best cartons on television, and us Marvel fanboys get nothing like that. The only DCAU quality Marvel show we got was Spectacular Spider-Man, which was cut down in its prime and completely isolated from the rest of the Marvel Universe.

Dude.

DUDE.

DUDE!!!

That hadn't even occurred to me but is completely the best idea I have heard all day. I want this to happen. So bad.

On a related point...

Doesn't anyone else find it a bit weird that Clark Gregg is in this since he, you know, sorta died in Avengers?

Very, very true. The DCAU is far superior to the Marvel one (I love Marvel too but some of the animated stuff is truly awful)and I'm glad it's there (it's pretty much the reason I got into Batman as a kid) but after seeing the Avengers and knowing someone like Whedon is making a show set in that universe it really is making me question would I rather have the fantastic animated universe or the fantastic live-action universe that no one thought would ever be possible.

Who knows maybe if the JL movie kills all the DC movies hard enough they might all go into hiding until someone comes along a decade from now and starts afresh and, ya know, plans out the multi-film franchise like Marvel did and not throw a team-up movie together. Sigh, 'Man of Steel' really is looking like the last good DC movie we're going to get for a while.

I'm so hyped for this show, they could fight against A.I.M. with MODOK or HYDRA with Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, Madame Hydra, Gorgon, Commander Kraken or even Sin (the Red Skull's daughter) so much potential ^_^

edit: Also Spider-Woman's history !!!

Is it bad that while reading this article there was a voice in the back of my head going

Please lead to a Firefly revival
Please lead to a Firefly revival
Please lead to a Firefly revival

I know it probably won't happen, but I can always hope that if this show turns out well that someone decides to give him a second chance with it. Ok third if you count Serenity.

Did he?

I mean, DID he? Last person he was with was Nick Fury, he isn't exactly known for being the most truthful individual.

"He was shot and didn't recover." can also mean "He now has a cyborg body." but what the average person thinks is "He dead."

I think the series may be a bit of a prequel to the events of The Avengers.

That said, I think it won't devolve into (as one poster said above) a CSI like show, CSI had no character development at all and it isn't Whedon's style.

Yay for a new Joss Whedon Show.

Yaaaaaaaay for it not being on Fox!

Boo for it being on ABC.

BOOOOOOOOOOO for it being S.H.I.E.L.D.

It might last slightly longer than Firefly and Dollhouse, but it won't last. Then again I never imagined Smallville to last so long, and it was a steaming pile of crap.

I expect S.H.I.E.L.D. to make a bigger impression than No Ordinary Family, or that show with Oracle and Batman's daughter that no one watched like 14 years ago.

I'm in the minority of people that don't give a shit about comics, and am quite sick of being forcefed adaptations of characters that EVERYONE is already familiar with 4 times over.

It must be quite easy to create scripts from scratch in Hollywood these days when all the characters are already created, their backstories and relationships established GENERATIONS ago, and all you need is to cobble together pieces of various fanfics and slap a coat of 3D on it to get people to scream at you to TAKE THEIR MONEY!

ABC can't make let a good show run a single season. They prefer reality trash and grey's anatomy barf fests. The only decent show they have at the moment- Last Resort, was already canceled before even completing a single season.

Two words:

This one is a huge fan of Joss and this new shiney Avengers universe. I'm pretty optimistic about this series.
