Hope it is something good and not a superhero CSI.

The pilot will feature Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson
Phil's dead. Loki skewered him something fierce.
Three words: Life Model Decoy. Every high-ranking agent gets one. Fury has several, including one that kinda went rogue and joined a demonic cult. This is gonna be cool if it spotlights all of the lesser-used villains. They could have epic storylines, possibly involving a certain blonde valkyrie and Hera, maybe with cameos from the Warriors 3. In case you didn't notice, I'm geeking out a bit here. Looking forward to it.

Doesn't anyone else find it a bit weird that Clark Gregg is in this since he, you know, sorta died in Avengers?
We never actually see him die. It's possible Fury lied. After all, he already lied about the Captain America trading cards that were supposedly in Phil's jacket. Coulson may well have survived that, after all. Which would just make him more awesome. He was Coulson Kebabed by a God and lived to tell the tale.

Of course, that's speculation, so take it as you will.

Avengers was the first Whedon thing I've ever liked, so I can only hope it's more like that and much less like his other TV series. (Please, please no tiny, pretty badass barefoot girl, Joss, I'm tired of seeing your fetishes.)

ABC and Marvel are both owned by Disney and looking for ways to pull people that don't care about comics/superheroes to pull them into their movie universe with a TV show about the decidedly non-powered characters in a world with giant powerful things running amok.

It fits Whedon's niche nicely as his shows have previously contained characters that are just human in worlds full of monsters, and ABC has a vested interest in keeping it going, I'd say it's a good start.

Might we see a Whedon show that lasts more than two seasons? Superhero shows don't do too well on TV. Then again, that's because most of them suck.
Buffy the vampire slayer lasted 7 seasons. and I'm pretty sure that's joss whedon.

OT:
I'm a huge fan of Joss Whedon so I can't help looking forward to this.

I'm also pretty sure this will give a chance for Whedons to play with some of the marvel universe characters that are unavailable for movies but free for tv like Spidey and the XMen. Awesome is on the way.

Yeah, but the reaction in the movie from his death makes it seem like it was the actual Phil who died. Even if it were a LMD, the real Phil wouldn't be able to be seen (ever again) by any of the Avengers because it would undermine the group's moral and trust.

Did anybody ever really like SHIELD in the comic books? I remember them as a non-superhuman organization that had a ridiculous flying heli-carrier. I remember Nick Fury as an over-muscled Mr. Fantastic look-a-like with a cigar and an eyepatch. They just never did anything for me.

That being said, I can see how an elitist organization that has ties to superheroes can work as a good foundation for a TV series. Brief cameos by superheroes means low production budget with fewer special effects. You can bring lesser-known superheroes to the masses and that's a good thing. Josh IS the right people to write/direct. Get the right people to act and I'll tune in. ABC, don't screw this up. I watched the failed 2011 NBC Wonderwoman pilot an cringed at the characters, story and acting. (Okay, except for Elizabeth Hurley. She made everybody else look like they were putting on their senior play.)

Oh for pete's sake. No, just no. A million times no. A hundred million times no. I give props where props are due. Joss Whedon has made some seriously awesome original series. That being said, anything he touches that is not his own creation is attrocious. Remember he is the guy that singlehandedly destroyed the Alien franchise with Alien: Resurection. Get him to make an original series.. or even reboot firefly.

Yet the Avenger's was pretty awesome while not his own creation.

The action was awesome, yes. The characterizations were down right bad. Often characters would do things/say things that were not in keeping with their established characters from the earlier movies. This same thing happened with the Ripley character in Alien: Resurection. Whedon does original characters well, when working with established ones that are not his own... well... bleck.

Well, yes. This is called "character development". The characters in Avengers aren't exactly the same characters from their earlier movies because they've changed since then. Like Stark becoming more of a team player, Banner being more controlled, Cap being angrier and more depressed and so forth.

Well, Buffy and it's spin-off Angel weren't on FOX, so that's a plus. And I think ABC really, really wants a sci-fi show and will stick with it in the long run. I am super-psyched for S.H.I.E.L.D.! Will any classic agents show up? We have to see the fate of Dum-dum Duggan!
