GameStop President Claims Microsoft Support For Used Games

Despite all the recent talk about the end of the preowned games market as we know it, GameStop President Tony Bartel says Microsoft "realizes the value of the buy-sell-trade model" at retail.

The truth is that right now, we really don't know how the Xbox One will handle preowned games. At the moment it appears that Microsoft will take a cut [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124323-Update-Xbox-One-To-Take-Cut-With-Every-Pre-Owned-Sale] of all used game sales, which it will for some reason share with publishers; retailers may end up with less than ten percent of the purchase price. But this all comes from "sources" who, while presumably in the know, aren't quite the same as an official confirmation from Microsoft.

Neither is this statement from Bartel, but at least it isn't anonymous and as the president of GameStop, it's a good bet that he has some level of insight into the situation above and beyond most of us. "Xbox has said that they do support the trade-in/resale of games at retail and that they want to handle communication from this point forward on that," he said during a recent financial call. "I think what is important to note is that all three of the consoles that have launched have now come back and they say, 'I realize the value of the buy-sell-trade model,' and they have built that into their new consoles moving forward. We anticipate that we are going to be able to leverage that, like we leverage it on the consoles today."

It's fair to note that Bartel is also the Mondo Hondo at a retailer facing a potentially existential crisis wrought by the looming console generation, and part of his job is to convince investors who may be worried about such things that all is well. He certainly has his job cut out for him in that regard: GameStop's share price [https://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:GME] dropped more than 11 percent today, sliding from an opening value of $35.20 to a low of $30.94. It has since begun to recover somewhat and, at the time of writing, sits just shy of $32.00

inb4 hordes of people ready to ignore article contents and bash XB1 anyway.

OT: I am really really looking forward to see how they handle this. Let's hope we get something more concrete soon.

Am I the only one who's immediate thought was that this is Microsoft trying to convince GameStop not to put the XBone shelf behind a wall of fire?

MSFT stock was trending up in advance of the XBox announcement, and has trended down since. Gamestop's stock has plummetted in the last week. Sony's stock is trending upwards across this time frame, with a significant 1 day boost after the Xbox reveal.

This indicates that Sony is in a great position relative to Gamestop to negotiate advatageous terms, both for new and resale, all without resorting to heavy-handed DRM.

This doesn't quell my concerns at all...I had no doubt Gamestop and other "authorized" retailers would be accommodated for by the launch of the console. The question is what about person to person trades? Rentals? Sales through Craigslist, Ebay, CAG, ect. If they're shut out much of the secondary market, then XBone will price out a lot of people who game on a budget.

If Gamestop doesn't stand up for consumer rights now, I will gladly watch them go bankrupt. I won't be supporting Xbone and I expect Gamestop to take a stand with consumers like me.

I agree, its an interesting thought that Microsoft is trying to work with the used game industry rather than fight it like developers and publishers have been doing. I guess we still have to wait for e3 to get details

My guess is that they will get an increased retailer share on new game sale, else GameStop would never be so cooperative to only 10% cut on used games resell, has used game are the only thing that keep specialist video game store afloat, has the margin on new game sale is too low to stay in business.

They are not entitled to any money from used sales and this end run around the consumer is irritating.

The 10% thing is actually a misinterpretation, and it refers to the maximum sale discount appliable to used games compared to the retail price (at least that's what the original article claimed).

This is still a horrible news, if confirmed, because it would possibly mean very high prices for used games. Gamestop will still get its cut, so it's obviously not worried about it.

The only reason why the CEO of Gamestop is fine, is his company is still making a profit from used games, and now so is Microsoft.

Oh, Microsoft isn't so blind as to not know that if they alienate retail they aren't going to sell consoles. They likely were working with Gamestop and other retailers before the big reveal. Unfortunately, as others have pointed out, GS is not in a good position at the moment to negotiate terms, and are likely afraid to losing valuable business if they intentionally block the Xbox One. Albeit, I still hope they change their mind and stonewall the crap out of Microsoft.

Its not like this stuff is all concrete. All I'm saying is that maybe if they work something out, we won't have to deal with bullshit like dlc codes for new games

Agreed. They're trying to trample all over consumer rights and spit in the face of the First Sale Doctrine.

I'm curious how they'll go about this in Europe, where the entire continent has ruled that, NO, no company can tell you what to do with the games or software you buy in the resale market. You have every right to resale any game you get to whomever you want for as much or little as you want, and no butthurt company can stop that.

YOU, the consumer, don't even have a voice in this negotiation in the first place. You just get whatever bone they throw you.

We are going to find out if Gamestop really means it when they say "Power to the Players".

Yes I do...? I have the choice to not buy their shit. Which I won't. I don't shop from Game Stop and I don't like Microsoft too much either. I have plenty of options. I can switch to only using my pc for gaming and buy all my games off Steam. Since I have a choice, I will go with the ps4 because at the moment, they won't be locking games to accounts in the first place and Sony has been good to me so far. Honestly, the console barely even exists yet

Yes, you have that choice and you better hope that Sony doesn't cave too.

I laughed at the whole PC thing, the used game market has already been destroyed on PC. Steam is the very model Microsoft is using with one time activation codes. The only difference is that Microsoft is "allowing" you to trade in your used games but they will devalue them to the point that no one would bother to do so and by next gen all three console manufacturers will be following Steams model (minus the sales).
