Oculus Rift Porn Purveyor Gives Props to Mass Effect

One of the developers behind the Oculus Rift adult game Wicked Paradise says the sex scenes in Mass Effect were much more erotic than anything currently available from adult videogames.

In December 2012, the inevitable happened: A company calling itself Sinful Robot announced to the world that it was making porn for the Oculus Rift [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121135-Here-Comes-the-Virtual-Reality-Porn-for-the-Oculus-Rift] virtual reality headset. It's an obvious fit in my book, but for one reason or another the main investor in the venture pulled out, leaving the project in limbo. But now it's back, with a new name and a more detailed plan for the future, and an interesting source for inspiration, too.

Previous attempts to make erotic virtual reality games have been "ridiculously bad," Wicked Paradise founder and CEO Jeroen Van den Bosch told Road to VR. "There is nothing sexy about unrealistic models that move like rusty robots with faulty servos," he said. "If you want to genuinely create an erotic atmosphere in a videogame you need to convincingly cross the uncanny valley.

He added that story and setting are "everything" and referenced a title that will be far more familiar to gamers than any VR sex game. "The non-explicit sex scenes in Mass Effect are much more erotic than current available explicit adult videogames. This is because you care about the characters in Mass Effect," he continued. "A player will never feel very attracted to a virtual character if he or she doesn't care. I believe that virtual reality is the perfect medium for an erotic videogame because you can make the player feel really connected to your computer characters."

I've always thought the sex scenes in Mass Effect were overwrought and silly, but it's an interesting idea. But the current state of the porn industry (as it's been explained to me by others, of course) makes me think that caring about characters (or the people behind them) isn't necessary to its enjoyment. Eroticism may be a different matter, but the line between erotica and porn is a fine one that's often drawn based entirely upon who you happen to be talking to at any given moment. Oculus Rift "adult content" is inevitable, but caring about the characters that appear in it? I'm a little more doubtful about that.

Yeah, to be fair it doesn't sound like he's particularly praising the quality of the Mass Effect sex scenes so much as lambasting the quality of dedicated porn games. I think DVS has summed it up pretty neatly! : P

Adult videogames must suck. And not in the fun way!
3D (polygonal, not necessarily stereoscopic) ones, anyway. Maybe the Japanese are onto something with all those 2D porn games XP

The sad thing is, he isn't wrong. Yes, the terrible Mass Effect scenes are the best sex scenes gaming has to offer. Or at least the best I've seen.

Oh, videogames...

Of course the picture isn't working for me.

Dammit! I was so interested in what that might look like.

I once heard "erotica" being described as "porn that works for me". I still find it hard to disagree.

... I feel weirdly tempted to check that out. For science. (and to quell disbeliefs regarding uncanny valleys)

On the whole I'd say it's probably a positive thing somebody tries and create a sex game that isn't horrible. Problem is just that probability is massively stacked against him.

I have a warning to people are thinking of trying Corruption of Champions(text based game) out of curiosity. If you are not pretty much immune to being greatly disturbed by the crazy things that rule 34 can throw at you; then don't consider trying it.

Technically, "Porn" involves live people. So if you filmed people having sex, that would be porn. SEE: Caligua, Keep up the Lust ET, etc. Erotica is material specifically created to cause arousal, but has no live models of sex. See: Every Hentai ever.
And about Coc: No uncanny valley. All text based. Just wait till you find Owcra Village though...

I don't... understand what they are making. Are they just making some trashy erotic story with a whole lot of innuendo and fade to black, or are they making porn? I found the sex scenes in Mass Effect to be just kind of ... there. I didn't feel any emotion, and I certainly didn't get aroused in any way.

Really, as someone who has seen their fair share of hentai I very much think fake porn with fake people can be great. I will admit that most 3D rendered porn I've seen is pretty bad.

I guess, really, are they just making wank material or are they trying to make some eroge love story thing?

So what this guy is saying that the "Barbie dolls rubbing against each other like a preteen boy was manipulating them, while also slowly turning the lights on and off as if it was something out of a TV movie 'sex scene' where it fades to black before any real thrusting happens" is a lot more convincing than, say, entire genres of video games where sex is the core component? The kind of games that have actual thrusting, nudity, digitally-enhanced no-no parts, voice acting, and interactivity?

Well holy shit, I have to see this for myself then! Never mind all of those sex simulators that come out of Japan, or those bizarre sex "MMO's" that advertise all over the internet. Or fucking Second Life. There's no way they can reach the Triple-X hardcore porn industry standards of the goddamn Mass Effect trilogy!

Actually The Witcher 2 has some very good ones, not that I... I'm only talking on a technical point of view... I think I'll shut up.

Either way the bar was set a long time ago

Porn with character development and effort put into the writing? So visual novels, but 3D and with the Oculus Rift.

Preordering now. For that... uh... CS:GO FOV advantage!
